A Syrah that became more powerful with each sip. We experimented with different foods on our charcuterie board. Winner in a class by it selves was the pairing with these small sweet spicy gurkins. Brought out layers of dark fruit and carried the wine a bit further to linger longer in your throat. Combining it with the Irish Dubliner cheddar type cheese covered by sour cherry jam exploded the somewhat hidden forest floor earthiness. — 5 years ago

07' Bertani della Valpolicella Amarone Classico. Layers of JAM & rich ripened dark red & black fruit. A raisin mix at the tail end of the palate. An hour + in the decanter and it barely budged. Extraordinary! Fresh and dried fruit -figs, apricots, dates under powdered sugar, cloves, star anise, cinnamon, pain d'epice and candied ginger -all dynamic and in motion like a mighty sprinter whose broad, soaring gate seems like his feet never really touch the ground -the Usain Bolt of Tokaji and hopefully restorative like this King of Wines and Wine of Kings is purported to be -what we read lifted kings from their deathbeds and back to their healthy and hale selves. Rich juice squeezed from the Royal Slope in Columbia Basin. A sweet edge upfront turned into an earthy, mineral plethora of flavors with very soft tannins fully integrated. Pleasant finish. I had to score it high because it vanished pretty much by it selves. Sensuously deep, dark blood red, crimson against a dark violet and deeper blackberry juice that oozes, drips from freshly picked fruit squeezed between fingers offering the sort of memorable stain one keeps against well-oiled heart pine floors or worn proudly post a power twirl finding air over the rim settling nicely against a white linen barely buttoned shirt and suntanned skin (I wear this often). A twisting twirl and a deep nose hit after an aerated pour and 15 minutes of glass play reveals seductive, complex well-measured black and blue fruit nicely spiced not unlike a fruit-centric sugarless dessert in the oven sharing the ambient air space with a light chamomile tea. When it slips and slides through your lips its acidic brightness is challenged by its tannic grip slowing its pace as it gingerly feels its way like a first-new cave dive at night memorizing crooks and crannies as blackberry and black plum show their familiar selves against tinges of blueberry, hinting of anise and spice spelunking deeper, further with a mental Kodak moment that hangs, lingers and lulls. I deeply dig this fine wine (hear that with my slight southern accent; works better that way)...🍷🕶

Some of that Italian shit stink that we all love but at least there is some herbs behind that oak. Nice fruit as they say but it has structure. Unbelievable!!! A Cabernet that only can express it selves like this in Barossa Valley. Basically a Shiraz “wanna be”. So expressive, so rich, but fresh and focused grounded by a solid vibrant, mineral backbone. There are warm, Mediterranean spices filtering through this fresh dark fruit. On to the 2012 Pontet-Canet from Paulliac paired with grilled lamb chops and made from scratch boulonese sauce. Fantastic. The wine expressed it selves very well after a good hour and half of decanting at about 60 F. The earthy umami flavors of the food propelled the wine above its weight. But the absolute best ever tasting quartered, seasoned potato wedges/fries from our guests brought the wine into outer orbit. The duck fat tasting fries revealed herbaceous floral notes on the mid palet and created a soothing long finish. With smooth fine grained tannins. — 5 years ago

This Lail Vineyards 2012 Blueprint Cabernet Sauvignon is deep purple in color, with a wonderful nose of dark red and blue fruits, black licorice, chocolate and a hint of Asian spices. We drank this wine over 2 days and it only got better the second day as the typical 2012 fruit bomb mellowed and hints of licorice, Asian spices and earth started to show them selves. , The mouthfeel is extremely inviting and full bodied, with mild acidity, medium viscosity and layered complexity. This is a beauty!

Pink Bulles Rosé 2013 - Jean Maupertuis.

Alors que nous préparons doucement notre "top 15 des meilleurs vins en 2014", il nous semble impossible de ne pas évoquer le fabuleux Pink Bulles rosé de Jean Maupertuis.

C'est dément ce que l'on peut faire avec du Gamay et c'est Gamay de faire des trucs aussi déments ! Et c'est aussi dingue de constater le nombre de gens talentueux que l'on trouve en Auvergne : Hervé Souhaut : Saint-Épine, Destezet - Nicolas Carmarans : Selves, Mauvais Temps - Frédéric Gounan, Pierre Beauger, François Dhumes, etc.

Oui, Jean Maupertuis fait partie de ces vignerons qui faisaient autre chose dans une autre vie et puis il y a des rencontres qu'on n'oublie pas, comme celles avec Marcel Lapierre et Pierre Overnoy, lors de sa formation viti-œno. Ces fameuses rencontres qui font basculer un destin d'un état solide à celui de liquide. Du travail au plaisir.

Dans un superbe article de Libération, qui lui est consacré, on peut lire ceci : "Robe rose pâle, bulles très fines, nerveuses. Arômes de fruit délicats, pointe de sucre résiduel équilibrée d’une très belle acidité. Ce vin pétillant abordable, «Pink Bulles», tenait haut la dragée au champagne réputé". Et vous savez quoi ? C'est exactement ça !

Sauf que, ce qui n'est pas dit, c'est que ce vin enchanteur est léger et subtil. Un pétillant qui marie les attentes et les exigences que l'on peut avoir pour un excellent champagne, tout en y apportant une fraicheur et une jeunesse que celui-ci possède rarement. Mais, c'est de l'insolence ? Oui, tout à fait mais surtout un peu de folie avec beaucoup de maîtrise. C'est vrai, souvent, les pétillants natures sont fous mais peu peuvent revendiquer le fait d'être aussi raffinés que celui de Jean Maupertuis.

A 12 euros, vous tenez peut-être ici la clé du bonheur, ou en tout cas, la clé d'un bon moment entre amis autour d'une boisson enthousiasmante. Il ne reste plus qu'à trouver la cachette, bon courage (!) et bonne dégustation ;)
