Morgado

Rita's Crown Pinot Noir 2016

I will probably keep updating my comments as I taste. I exchanged a few correspondence with the Morgado Winery and was encouraged that this wine would be great to drink now...and really appreciated that shipping fee was extremely reasonable! 😉

Initially I was going to wait but given the previous disaster I thought what the heck... be the first to rate the 2016

Huge profile for a Pinot Noir!
A lot of baking spices on the front and midpalatel! Bay leaf...subtle black cherry!
My score is going up...I just noticed the Alcohol...15.1%...absolutely no burn! I just finished a twelve hour shift was beginning to think I was maybe dehydrated (the way this is hitting me)!
To me this wine is highly extracted..different for sure...interested how it would present if I had waited...saving the rest to taste in a few days!
Maybe suggest pairing with food.

Revisiting this wine on day two..massive still! Big on baking spices..bay leaf..Bakers chocolate..wishing I had some Olive Temponade Hummus to pair with this. As @Ron R suggested it is not your typical PN style! I keep searching for fruit that maybe with time? Yet, I am intrigued as this wine is fascinating to explore!

Crown Point

Estate Selection Red Bordeaux Blend 2015

Earlier this week, a rep for Crown Point wines hosted a tasting to show off a few of their newer releases. New to me, they are out of Santa Barbara and have the duo of Adam Henkel (former assistant winemaker at Harlan for 8yrs) and Philippe Melka (who came on starting with the ‘15 vintage) making the wines.

I found there to be a noticeable step up in quality between the ‘14 and this ‘15...maybe that was due to Melka coming on board at this point. Where this differs from the ‘14 is the added cab franc and petit Verdot. Smells a touch more herbaceous and crunchy instead of being a fruit bomb. It was also more chalky and dusty. Floral with potpourri and flowers give this better balance on the nose. The palate sports the whole fruit spectrum from red, blue and black but also has good acidity and tannin. Slightly savory finish of dark cocoa, peppercorns and cassis with underripe blackberries. Nice aging potential.

Imperial Pumpkin Smash Stout

Ever one of the better pumpkin offerings. Medium Chocolate brown with mere tufts of ecru that retreats to a spiderweb study against a black backdrop and minuscule pointillist’s lacing of an unctuous nature. Buttery toffee and dark candy glass with treacle and molasses mix with mocha and brownie warmth. Earmarks of vanilla bean and nutmeg with the finest dusting of just heated red chili and cooking coffee greet the nose. Initially, chili-cinnamon warmth appear then fade to espresso and bourbon-caramels. Thick malts, and licorice resins in raisin and date purées and beet and brown sugars. Vanilla is the finish with perfect Connecticut wrapped cigar flavors to make this an exceptional treat! #crownvalley #crownvalleyimperialpumpkinstout #pumpkinbeer #stout #imperialstout #beer #bier #birra #MObeer #missouribeer — 21 days ago

The difference between this wine and the previous two is that this is their Cabernet (92%) with just a dash of merlot, petit Verdot, malbec and cab franc. Similar to the ‘15 Estate Selection in how this is big and dense but still harmonious. Rich and dark fruits with graphite, cassis, and mocha. Big tannins with a dark and compact core...blackberries, underripe blueberries, violets, and dusty cedar.
