I have to be completely honest. This producer was not even on my radar. I tasted it at Elyse while tasting Montagu. We met the Winemaker-Kimberly Hatcher. In addition to being a Winemaker, she is a hero as a full time Firefighter in the Napa Valley. She also sports one hell of a ripped physique. Not sure where she finds the time.
I normally have an aversion to Santa Rita Hills Pinot as they are normally too extracted for me. Not the case here. It runs just short of that marker.
The 2018 Morgado drinks surprisingly well this young. The mouthfeel is sexy, rich, lush & full. The fruits are nicely ripened & just a touch candied; black plum, blackberries, dark cherries, raspberries mulberries & blueberries. Softly layered baking spices-cinnamon, nutmeg, clove & vanillin. Soft savory grilled meats, understated tobacco & soft leather, dark rich soils, black licorice, mixed berry cola, crushed rock powder, limestone/sandstone, soft wood use, black fruit tea with purple, dark, red & blue florals set in lavender. The round acidity is near perfect. The finish is as glorious as the start...rich, elegant, well knitted & balanced fruit and earth & persists minutes.
One of the nice surprises on our Napa experience. — 20 days ago
Excellent blend from sister winery to Crown Point — a month ago
So good. Big. Smooth — a month ago
More fruit forward than the others, but great balance. Would do well aged. — 9 days ago
2019 is great. Excellent cab franc pepper (green and black), tons of flowers, Pom juice, cherries, and stone. If you want an American Loire-like wine for thanksgiving this would be perfect. — 17 days ago
Awesome big bold Napa style cab, drank with dinner at the Ritz Carlton Bacara with Dave and Kat — a month ago
Granite crown is always a treat. Sweet strawberries, blackberries and baked plums, balsamic, menthol, dried beef, mushroom, loamy earth. Definitely time to drink soonish (which I feel is increasingly true of Renaissance wines from this era) but fruit is still there and thoroughly enjoyable. — 2 months ago
Dated but with a spicy herbal finish — 14 days ago
A toast to Rosemary Cakebread as we sit to watch season 4 of the CROWN, highlighting other incredible Trail Blazers - PM Thatcher, Queen Elizabeth II, and Diana. This cab can really go another 10 years plus, but enjoyable now with some decanting. cedar and tannins on the nose - casis and fruit on the palette. — 5 days ago
