Cain Concept The Benchland Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2008

Still showing tremendous power 11 years on. Could easily go another 11. Quite tight, needed decanting. — a month ago

Vine Hill Vineyard Chardonnay 2004

Nice piece of Napa history went down tonight to celebrate the upcoming 15th anniversary at Folly Beach SC. Herbal nose. Aged yellow fruit. Poured medium to dark amber color into the glass. An hour gave this one more aromatics. Cashews, peanuts, rosemary, overripe yellow fruits. The entry was surprisingly dense and full bodied. Palate rather equal to the nose. Finishes with a little more acidity than I thought it would. Went well with an eclectic group of tacos which brought out a kinds of things here. — 8 days ago

Monthly WTF group recap. Theme this month was “bring something special”. Normally we taste all of the wines blind, but we decided to do a relaxed night with amazing wines at a great restaurant. Spectacular evening!

One of my favorite producers, and likely just entering its prime window (where I imagine it will hold for a decade or so). The profile here is dense yet soft and round. Gorgeous aromatics of baked fig and ripe blackberry with pencil shavings and cassis. Black cherry jam, graham cracker, violets and dusty traits on the palate. Such a delicious wine right now. Thanks

When I read that this was a blend and had Malbec added I was extremely excited. Didn’t disappoint, very smooth. You can taste the love that goes into this. — a day ago

Case Basse di Gianfranco Soldera

Riserva Brunello di Montalcino Sangiovese 1988

This was my wotn & where the group split between the 88 & 90 for 1st place. The 88 had the most ethereal nose of the night almost Burgundian like showing sweet red cherry, berry fruits, baking spices & rose petal. — 17 days ago

What a treat this will be in 10yrs! Very youthful right now. I don’t know how the grapes are used here, but it was reminiscent of whole cluster Pinot. Similarities to the Antica Terra Angelical wine but more spice and denser core. Lifted and energetic profile. Smoked and slightly bloodied with iron and smoky beef jerky. The finish showed tart mulberries and baked black cherries. Oak wasn’t very noticeable. Hold.

Nice but, these are in need of such long cellaring. Bet it still seemed youthful?

@David T : Yes, very youthful indeed, but I loved getting to try this! Really enjoyed it. Need to find an older vintage to try!

If you aren’t familiar with this label, it’s a unique concept. The winery is located in Fredericksburg, TX yet the wines are from all over the world (fruit is cold shipped to the winery or made in the country they are sourced from). This is probably best now or over the next few years. It has typical orange blossom and honey notes, with a very creamy mid palate...like an orange creamsicle. Lots of sweetness without much nuttiness.

Notes are consistent with when I had this back in May. Candied and ripe showing graham cracker slathered in blackberry jam accompanied by cherry liqueur. Typical zin sweetness with only a hint of age to it. Fun and enjoyable Napa example. Thanks

I normally lean toward Syrah dominant wines, but I’m really starting to appreciate Saxum’s play on Grenache. Lots of spiced red fruits here like rhubarb and peppercorn dusted black cherries with some sweet baking spices. Great acidity here and not remotely close to tasting like its ABV. Palate is similar to the aromatics with bright red fruit but has a core of black peppercorn, jerky and underripe blackberries. Very good right now.

@Bryan Kesting : Agreed. I think I prefer Saxum’s Grenache wines over their Syrah wines...can’t believe I’m saying that!
