My experience with South African red wines is limited, but I’ve enjoyed some Meerlust reds and a few other random bottles. I have to say, while this wasn’t a revelation, it is the best South African wine I’ve had to date.
This was a bottle opened blind for a few people. Oddly enough, there were similarities to this and a 2013 Almaviva…a burnt rubber/tire note on the nose alongside a vegetal/herbal pronounced note on the nose. Tangy/sour black cherries, red currant and red licorice too. Mostly red and black underripe fruit dominant. Even a bit of tar. This drinks like a chinon mixed with a lean vintage Bordeaux…the spice and vegetal flair is there next to the lightweight mid palate from a cooler Bordeaux vintage. A blend of five “noble varietals” in honor of Bordeaux, this was a unique wine that had people guessing from all over the world. After 1-2hrs of air from
bottle, it was balanced/integrated and ready to roll. I’d enjoy these sooner rather than later. — 5 years ago

Tres beau sauternes! En demi bouteille...il a perdu le côté petrolé qui me fait pas tripper....et on a tout simplement un beau sucre. Tire d éponge, miel, abricot confit et belle texture sans sensation de lourdeur. Bravo!

Nice amber beer. Nice and malty. Reminded me of Yuengling. — 7 years ago
Excellent, Chardonnay as it was meant to be. — 8 years ago
The wine is starting to tire. Incredible nose, cherries, blueberries, spice, leather and tobacco. On the palate it is probably past its prime. Super soft tannins, slight red fruits and a bit of oak. Very fun and interesting wine. Super enjoyable. — 2 years ago
One of my favorite producers! 1hr+ decant. Dark red color. Nose had cherries, tar, and baking spices. Wine had nice depth and balance, but began to tire towards the end of the bottle. Medium minus finish. I would drink up and be mindful of the amount of air. — 5 years ago
The nose on this is really nice. It’s floral, perfume, blueberry, and bright red fruit. The palate almost doesn’t match. Not in a bad way. Nose seem to promise delicacy and palate was big and powerful. It’s red and blue fruit with some salinity, rubber tire, and meaty smokiness.
92 for now. We grabbed a bunch on a good deal. I’m excited to see this evolve over time. Super young but really enjoyable now. — 6 years ago
Smokey, like a tire fire. Delicious — 6 years ago
Well I pulled the cork I did not like the nose at all seemed rather astringent. Think hot rubber tire meets petroleum. So off to a decanter for a breathe of fresh air. Seemed to do the trick after about 30 minutes. Hints of strawberries, hot soil and some oak showed up. Upon drinking it it had a sort of lingonberry meets raspberry but finished more towards the strawberry side of things. This is one that does get better sip by sip. Thought the acid was going to be higher but pleased it was not. I think this is one of those people are either like or hate. I fall on the like it side. — 7 years ago
I enjoyed this, hubby did not. It does have a diesel, burnt tire smell. Not the best on the nose. Tasted great though. Full bodied, very jammy. Strawberry and lingering sweetness. I would buy again & I know I’d get the whole bottle to myself. 🙂 — 3 years ago
Balanced, length , body. Nicely layered. Barnyard, chocolate, graphite, rubber tire. Medium bodied, good acid. Drops off just a bit but decent length. Very nice. — 6 years ago
Medium body, medium acidity, high tannins. Slight taste of strawberry and cranberry, dusty and clay earth, and very spicy. This is for fans of dry earthy reds, but who want a lighter bodied red. — 6 years ago

Another straggler since 2017 note but it’s doing well standing tall with a firm texture and earthy bite compared to yesterdays — 5 months ago
