Casale del Giglio

Satrico Lazio Bianco IGT 2024

SATRICO 2024, Bianco IGP. Lazio, Italy 🇮🇹

Overview
A precision blend of Chardonnay 34% · Sauvignon Blanc 33% · Trebbiano 33% from Casale del Giglio combining Chardonnay’s structure, Sauvignon Blanc’s aromatic lift, and Trebbiano’s freshness. Bottled at 13.5% ABV, this wine bridges modern technique with ancestral regional identity.

Aromas & Flavors
Layered and multidimensional. Citrus zest, white peach, subtle tropical hints, and delicate herbal notes weave together seamlessly. Aromatically complex without being aggressive, everything in tension and harmony.

Mouthfeel
Structured yet energetic. Chardonnay provides body, Sauvignon brings edge and lift, and Trebbiano adds linear freshness. The result is a dynamic, evolving palate that feels architectural and intellectually engaging.

Food Pairings
Branzino, herb-crusted chicken, pasta alle vongole, roasted vegetables, or aged pecorino.

Verdict
A cerebral white blend that moves faster than language. Dimensional, balanced, and deeply expressive of Lazio’s evolving white identity. This is serious white wine.

🍷 Personal Pick
Strategic allocation territory. This isn’t just a blend, it’s a statement. One for near-term reflection. One for future “I knew this was special” validation.

Insane Chenin. Reductive but opulent. Waxy yet clean. So fucking cerebral. — 3 years ago

Super fine and mineral nose. Confectionery. Crushed rocks. This is dancing on the palate. Textured and rich but it’s also so fine. Juicy and concentrated and so sappy and so pure. Dense yet dancing. The most cerebral wine of the trip. — 4 years ago

Viña Tondonia Gran Reserva Rioja Blanco Malvasia Viura 1981

Splash decanted directly before service; enjoyed over the course of a few hours out of red Solo cups. The 1981 Gran Reserva Blanco pours, a golden color with medium viscosity. On the nose, the wine is vinous with notes of Khalas dates, dried apricot, black lemon, almonds, toasted coconut and marshmallow. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long and the texture is waxy. A cerebral wine and just lovely stuff. Well stored bottles have a long life yet left ahead. Drink now with patience and plenty of air and through 2051. — 7 months ago

Clos de Guichaux Saumur Chenin Blanc 2010

Wild, bracing, cerebral. Every glass was a different wine. Seemingly over-mature at first, then a complete about-face by the end if the bottle. Fresh and dried fruit, honey, woolly, stony, crushed flowers, salt, tea leaves, sweet spice. — 3 years ago

Mind bender from Canary Island - first of all, beautiful bottle with custom flourish on the top opening. This wine is wild, so much saline & minerals, crushed seashells & stones, lemon/lime, dried tea leaves & herbs, some quinine… just so out here. Austere angular, all sharp edges & zesty acidity, and absolutely viciously bone dry. You have to get the food pairing right on this - we didn’t but still a cerebral exercise. — 3 years ago

The story goes-as told to me by the importer rep doing a seminar & tasting- is that the unique bottles date from the winery’s origins as an olive oil producer. Don’t quote me but that’s the story @ESF 🤗

Good to know @Peter Sultan , the bottle has a really unique fluted shape as well - I bought some of their dessert wine as well, like to support producers like this - especially what they go through to make this juice

@S.S. Mandani really nailed this note: didn't hesitate grabbing an obscure southern French varietal from Redwood country in northern CA. there was a distinct genuineness to this wine, a juicy savory engaging mouthfeel, very cerebral & well made (11%!) - you can tell they just got out of the way and let the grapes shine... — a year ago

Absolutely love this wine, had it before and this is a subsequent vintage that was similarly engaging and well-balanced, precise, not super generous, but a cerebral, thinking man’s wine — 2 years ago

Definitely not a cerebral wine, but one that wants you to grab a second bottle

Les Perrières Meursault 1er Cru Chardonnay 1997

Deep rich savory lemon nose with savory but not salty granularity in the creamy body and moderately sharp finish. The celebratory context it was enjoyed probably distracted from the cerebral session required to fully appreciate the aged beauty — 4 years ago
