Diego Conterno’s 2020 Barolo is, once again, a terrific wine in its peer group. Deep, fleshy and super-expressive, the 2020 is ready to go. Crushed rose petal, spice, blood orange, menthol and cedar are front and center. Vibrant, fleshy and terrifically balanced, the 2020 is an absolute delight. I loved it. A standout that got better with every sip. Rich and velvety. Bacon fat and smoked meats. Seamless. For most of the group this edged out a punching-above-its-weight ‘04 Pegau. Perfect extraction and pronounced woodsy tannins suggest 10-20 more years of evolution. — 7 years ago

Monthly WTF wine group. Special event this month as Ben provided all ‘80s Napa cabs. A few of us chipped in and provided some whites/bubbly.

WOW, this was a 47 year old, half bottle with mid-shoulder fill and a group of good friends who enjoy wine so it was its time. The only issue was it was at the end of the meal and a lot of excellent wines before it but: loaded with exotic fruits way too plentiful to mention but will give it a shot with passion fruit, mango, pineapple and then a lot of honey and caramel. The acid was there so not cloying at all. Not sure how much I paid and I believe my wife got this and others for a birthday about 40 or so years ago.

Monthly WTF guys blind tasting group. This month was our annual, and famed, Left Bank vs Right Bank theme. All wines served blind as usual. Started off with a Rosé and a champagne. Great night.

The first of two GPLs from the evening. Lots of saddle leather mixed with ripe fruit on the nose. Underripe black-cherry on the palate with an herbal dominants finish. Drink now. Thanks @Will Adams . — 7 years ago

Love this vintage of Dominus along with the 91. Served blind with the 86 Mouton where most of the group guessed the Dominus for the Mouton. Easy to do as this was so Bordeaux like with dark berry fruits, earth, cedar, leather & tobacco, beautifully balanced, structured, complex with a long finish. — 8 years ago

A Collection of great Australian Reds - Christmas Break up of the Tennis Group. Always a consistent Cuvée in the Penfolds stable but let down a little by the so so 2007 vintage in the Barossa. More savoury than fruit driven with liquorice and dark chocolate. — 4 years ago

Pontet Canet tasting and dinner with Alfred Tesseron.

What a great vintage. Its tannin structure will outlive the 09 and anyone 45 and older. The 2010 is a forever vintage and while different than 09, it will undoubtedly be just as great. It’s just going to take a lot more bottle age than the 09.

The body is full and round. The tannins have rounded but are still big and chewy. It’s more concentrated than 09. The fruit is really beautiful and again perfectly ripe. Dark currants, blackberries, dark cherries, black raspberries, dark plum, poached strawberries with hints of raspberries. Soft soil structure; dry top soil, moist clay, medium intensity dark spice, fresh tobacco, dry herbs, crushed rock powder, with dark, withering florals with violets. The texture is velvety. The structure and tension are big. The length and balance are worthy of its perfect score. For me, it’s just not there, yet! The acidity is really good. The long, lush, ripe, well balanced, polished finish is deliciously persistent.

I think this was my WOTN. It was ripe, showing smoked meat, roasted plum and baked blackberry pie aromatics. Full bodied, smooth, balanced between fruit and savory notes. Seems to be open for business now. I called this ‘08 Left Bank. — 7 years ago
