Brass Tacks

Château La Gomerie

St. Émilion Red Bordeaux Blend 2003

2003. Solid fill. Excellent cork. Decanted and throwing a sh*t-ton of sed. Big (but desirable) funk on the initial decant nose. Tasted after 1.5 hours and 2.5 hours open. Light medium/medium body. Dirty animal. A little brett but unusual, and fleeting, richness in the upper front gums with a touch of mint and watercress waving hello. Then, it rapidly got down to brass tacks. Dried earth, porcini mushroom and cassis. Likely another 4-5 years in this realm before switching things up. — a month ago

Hamilton Russell Vineyards

Hemel-en-Aarde Valley Chardonnay 2016

Very vintage golden glinted green, like brass that needs a polish.

Sits here nicely in the last of its best years.

Equal parts vanilla spiced whiskey and fleshy super sweet tropical fruits. Grilled pineapple, starfruit, banana, and orange liqueur.

Finger Lakes Dry Riesling 2018

Nice job for a tough year. This is a blue collar Riesling. Dark brass color, earthy nose, with loads of petrol-like minerality and lots of dried apricot. Intense and relatively weighty in the mouth, it packs a good initial wallop of minerality, with a bit of fruit, in a bone dry framework. Good acids. Persistence on the finish is lacking a bit, but otherwise lots of character.I agree with a prior tasting note I saw that this — surprisingly for a young wine — tastes like a well-aged Spatlese Trocken. — 3 years ago

Domaine Marc Morey & Fils

En Virondot Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Chardonnay 2002

Creamed corn pudding, corn nuts, lemongrass, vanilla, caramel, polished brass, lemon curd and apricot danish; a little clumsy, but what it lacks in finesse it makes up for in flavor. — 3 years ago

Mother Mary of God! Near Pomerol like. Charles Hendricks masterpiece. Menthol & a touch of mint.

Stunning vintage & wine.

This 07 is in perfect shape…at its peak. Still has 7 plus years of life.

Black raspberries, black raspberries, black plum, dark cherries, purple fruits, dark chocolate/pudding, dark spice, clove, nutmeg, softened, cinnamon stick, vanilla, dark, rich soils, moist, limestone mush, black tea, black licorice, bay leaf, salted caramel, dryish twig, menthol, mint, volcanic ash, sandalwood, dark withering to candied, red, blue florals, lavender framed in violets with perfect acidity and a amazingly, structured, well knitted/tensioned and elegantly polished finish that lasts minutes falling squarely on earthy minerality.

Second wine with an Allen Brother’s Ribcap recently bought on the secondary market for $55.

Morava– Znojemská Müller-Thurgau

Hmm Czech wine. I only know the beers. Color is bright golden. Almost brass. Smells good. Lemon bar and pineapple sparkling water. Just a hint of stream bank or ocean mist. Excellence on the palate. Zingy, supple and tart. Apples. Like really nice tart apples. This is a bit like Riesling, but also has Viognier and Chardonnay elements. The floral and citrus-y side is great. Really pleasing white wine. — a year ago

Chateau Lamagdelaine Noire

Cahors Malbec 2016

I don’t think I have ever had a Malbec from France. It made a statement! Crisp, sharp tannins submerged in dark extracts of pipe tobacco, cassis, dark cherry and unripe blue berries. Strong backbone with vibrant acidity. We started sipping it late at night and it evolved from an intriguing brass quartet to a full blown symphony with huge drums, trumpets, and double bass. — 3 years ago

I loved the hint of floral on this. Excellent wine to drink in its own and savor its flavor

Brut Rosé Champagne Blend

Actually the 21st Edition of the Brut Rose. Colour of Rose Gold like a high quality watch - copper, brass notes in the decadent colour. Aromatics of red currant, pink grapefruit and a hint of honey. An ultra fine mousse always found in prestige Champagne. The palate is all about Intensity showing the red fruits, spice and general influence of high quality Pinot Fruit. Much of this edition is based on the excellent 2008 vintage. A memorable Rose Champagne as expected - matched with Danish mussels Georgie brought from Copenhagen for my 71st Birthday - happy days. — a year ago

Thanks David. I agree - new editions are too expensive these days. A privilege to taste this one.

This is #Syrah on high mode. Like a Syrah IPA. Danky, plummy, ripey jammy and yet more balanced and unique than his Tensley vineyard version (which is pure residual sugar) if you ask me. I like Joey’s wines because they are brass balls. No excuses. — 3 years ago
