Black Cock

Robert Biale Vineyard

Black Chicken Napa Valley Zinfandel 2004

Nose has cherry liqueur, blackberry liqueur damp-dried leaves, forest moss, fresh ground French roast coffee beans and crushed fresh blackberries.

Palate has ripe black cherry, blackberry compote, chocolate brownie corner, wet leather with mild tannins and dry earth on a long finish.

Decanted 60m at time of notes, but continuing to unfold in the Gabriel-Glas.

The oldest vintage of Black Chicken in our cellar; acquired from the winery in April 2006. A good wine to pair with making a massive batch of BBQ sauce today for canning, something to sip while the aroma penetrates our house (usually lasts 2-3D 🤦🏻‍♂️) but we'll happily be enjoying sauce well into 2023.
(Biale is performing better then a 2004 Rosenblum opened alongside today.)

Monte Bello Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2013

Tasted at Ridge. Dark scarlet. Opaque and brooding. Notes of black fruit, unsweetened chocolate, dark earth and some spice. Powerful impact in the mouth. Great mouthfeel. Chewy. Still young and primary. Needs a decade or two of slumber and will surely improve. — 22 days ago

Château de Beaucastel

Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red Rhône Blend 1998

Taken to the Forest Theater in Carmel. Great nose with notes of red and black fruit, Herbs de Provence, wispy brush and some dry earth. Nice mouth feel and texture. I haven’t been a big fan of this vintage but this was very nice. — a month ago

Insignia Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2002

2005 Wine Spectator Wine of the Year.

1 hour decant(lots of fine /cloudy sediment). A captivating still dark garnet with just a touch of bricking. On the nose: jumping from the glass are beautiful notes of ripe cherry, floral, sweet vanilla oak, cigar, licorice, and mint. Taste: A smooth, creamy, balanced wine with black cherry, wet earth, cedar, and a plumy mocha long finish. YUM!!! Not opulent, just a well made Cali cab with more years to go.

Opened up quickly with a decant. Dark ruby color with some orange tint. Nice aged aromas of pipe tobacco, violets, leather, black currant.

Still has plenty of structure and tannic backbone.
