Vine Hill Ranch

Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon 2023

Big polished and showing a hint of heat. Happily the oak isn’t too pronounced. For me this baby needs time. — 2 months ago

Classic big California Chard! Oak and Butter, this is well knit stuff! Expensive and not great QPR sadly. By the glass at Bouchon. — 8 years ago

Bucklin

Old Hill Ranch Ancient Field Blend 2013

.
9.3

This is a wonderful wine - one of the best field blends I’ve had, really. There’s an impression of wild raspberries and boysenberries on the front end, backed by a layer of mildly peppery spice, and presented in a medium-bodied frame. The tannins are mostly resolved and the finish is clean and just a touch sweet. This was ready to go with minimal air.

This is only my second or third Bucklin and I’m becoming a big fan.

Freedom Hill Vineyard Pinot Noir 2016

Bold and big for an Oregon Pinot. Plenty of heft but very well balanced. Finely structured with loads of berries, plums and spice on the finish. Glad I found this gem. — 8 years ago

St Innocent Winery

Temperance Hill Vineyard Pinot Noir

This is my second Temperance Hill pinot, and I’m finding I’m a big fan. This opens with striking aromatics. Dark cherry, slow roasted strawberry, raspberry, incense, sage, thyme, and cloves all come through on the nose, with floral notes and forest floor peaking through with time in the glass. The flavors on the palate mirror the nose, with outstanding depth. There’s fresh acidity that amplifies the fruit but doesn’t overwhelm. The finish leaves incense, cloves, black tea, and a saline minerality lingering on the palate. Well balanced with good acidity and medium/firm tannins. I can see this aging well. Vintage is 2019. — 3 months ago

St. Helena Estate Mixed Blacks Field Blend Red Blend 2015

Outstanding, and still young, easily will improve over the next few years. On par with favorite Martinellis and Turleys, though lower alcohol and not quite as big. Still plenty of complexity and rich black fruits. — 5 years ago

Clifton Hill Syrah 2011

Big and powerful Syrah. Make sure you decant this one. Dark blue and black brambly fruit. Black pepper and licorice. Hint of earth and chocolate. Dark purple color and very long finish. If you are a bold Syrah fan, this will satisfy you. Very pleasant! Very consistent producer. — 7 years ago

Watch Hill Vineyard Syrah 2016

Delectable Wine
9.4

The 2016 Syrah Watch Hill Vineyard is dense, powerful and super-concentrated. Inky blue/purplish fruit, lavender, menthol, licorice and spice notes are all amped up in this rich, beautifully resonant Syrah. Dollops of Viognier add brightness and floral top notes, but the Watch Hill remains a pretty big, yet nuanced, wine. (Antonio Galloni, Vinous, September 2018) — 8 years ago

Olive Hill Estate Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

Founded by Bruce Cohn in 1984, Winery is located in the heart of Sonoma, surrounded by a 100-acre Olive Hill Vineyard where the soil is warmed by underground natural hot springs. A big Cab, aromas of ripe black fruits with intoxicating earthy tones. On the palate blackberry and ripe blueberry flavors with tobacco and bits of cacao surrounded by big firm tannins, lingering finish ending with rich fruit, oak and earthy character. — 8 years ago

Cakebread Cellars

Vine Hill Ranch Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon 2021

2021 is drinking really nicely now. Dark ruby/purple and a big bold nose of plum, vanilla, blueberry and blackberry - in that order. Not too tight or big, but medium acidity and medium large tannins. Long finish with some tobacco and leather once it has opened up a bit. Definitely not a fast sipper, the flavors linger for a good while after each sip. — 9 months ago

The Lodge Hill Clare Valley Shiraz 2015

Big, warm, leather and spices on the nose. So much spice on the front of the tongue as you sip, jammy stewed blackberries, good tannins that pull the moisture from your mouth, and a spicey tingle that just lingers. Andrea said to drink with all the BBQ'd meats, so with steak tonight and brats on 4th of July! — 8 years ago
