Finally getting around to posting wines from my annual Napa trip from two weeks ago. Always goes by quick! Lots of fun new stops this year.
It was my first time trying Moone-Tsai wines aside from their widely distributed Napa Valley Cab, so some of these were totally brand new to me. Melka is the winemaker.
Out of the three cabs we tried, this was my favorite for long term. Howell Mountain is my favorite AVA so the fruit is undeniable fantastic, but Melka has made this very tight and compact and most certainly not a fruit forward cab. The fruit is underripe...blackberries, raspberries, black currant, sage, charcoal and graphite aromatics. It is dusty, herbal and powerful on the palate. Dark cocoa, chalky, baked mixed berry pie, dash of baking spices, and massive structure. Give this some time away and you’ll be rewarded. — a day ago
One of the best SVD Beringer I've had in a while. It says everything from dark roasted black and blue fruits on the nose and entry. Mulling spices, chocolate, Espresso bean. Very dense. Tannin has resolved slightly, giving a little more depth and roasted character and black pepper spice to the finish. Gonna seek out more of these SVD Beringer Cabs. The prices for current releases are a little bit unrealistic IMO, but these can be found on the secondary market for extremely competitive prices. — 19 days ago
Celebrating my son’s first #birthday certainly merits the serving of some lovely wine 🍾🍷 What a wonderfully challenging yet humbling year it’s been raising a tiny baby into a little boy with a big heart, a loud laugh, and a captivating smile. I hope and pray today’s celebration is but one of many chapters.
Incredibly young (of course) and quite dormant. Decanted for 3 hours, probably needed another 1-2 at a minimum. Only until the final glass did some more defined notes begin to unveil themselves: vanilla, blackberry, baking spices, cassis, coffee grounds, mocha froth, and herbaceous qualities. Super powerful, yet it’s the blossoming gracefulness that will have me circling back on this in another 8–10 years. — 9 days ago
A wine with a soft beginning, but it explodes at the end. Black tea and tobacco on the nose. Ripe fruit on the front (cassis and blueberries), and, although the fruit is sweet￼, it’s very restrained. The tannins are also restrained, but at the same time they’re solid and smooth with a gentle mouth feel on the mid palate. And like the guiding hand of an old friend, with a gentle insistence they lead you into a room where there’s a surprise party waiting for you. And the band starts playing as you enter the room. It’s an unexpected finale which is pretty spectacular, with all sorts of high notes overlaid on deeper earth tones. Then the earth notes fade, leaving the high notes vibrating into a long finish. Typical Howell Mountain style with very firm structure and excellent dark garnet color and high acidity. This baby needs decanting for not less than 2 hours and is still improving 36 hours later. It’s a very sturdy wine, enjoyable on its own or paired with a beautifully charred rib eye. I’m worried that Plumpjack will increase its price for this. Cheers! — 14 days ago
Very pleased with this showing. Displayed a nice bouquet on Sunday evening. Notes of sandalwood and coffee and tobacco on the palate. Tannins are still prominent, which is a good sign for cellaring. Nice maple-like notes with dark berries on the finish. — 16 days ago
