Tonight's wine is the 2016 Spottswoode Mary's Block Sauvignon Blanc.

On the nose there are very distinct notes of grapefruit, peach, lime, melon, herbaceous notes and minerals.

On the palate there are lovely notes of grapefruit, tangerine, lime, white peach, grassy notes, herbaceousness and minerals.

This wine is medium bodied with a crisp and clean mouthfeel, medium + to high acidity that move very well into a long citrus and mineral finish. What a beautiful Sauvignon Blanc this is and it has at least another 5 years or more left in store. Opened up very big with loads of blue fruit. Second tasting it was totally secondary flavors more of dirt and soil but in a good way. Third all components had combined into a fantastic wine and more Bordeaux than Napa valley. Well made and could have sat down for many years to come. — 24 days ago

Had a lovely visit here in early 2020 with Haley. I fee like these wines don’t get as much recognition as they should, especially based on the quality of the fruit and the wine.

I opened this and gave it a quick pour…first thought was it was just kind of there. Wasn’t expressive, but wasn’t flawed. About 15-30mins later, it finally blossomed. For me, I always get a distinct note out of Wight vineyard…normally a high toned cherry/sweetened raspberries and sometimes a kiss of eucalyptus. I got all of that here on both the nose and palate, just slightly toned down. At 15.3ABV for 2005, this was well balanced and integrated. After corking the remaining third and having for dinner, it sported a lot of cherry chewing tobacco with herbal crusted ripe black cherries. This is bridging the gap between new world and old at this point. Best to consume in the next couple years if you want that balanced profile. — 8 days ago
