St Desir

Château Ducru-Beaucaillou

Saint-Julien Red Bordeaux Blend 1985

1985. Synth laden moment. Depeche mode. Tears for fears. But I digress. Just opened this. It’s quite a structured wine. The nose is a little muddled right now but that’s because I didn’t decant. That said, after 15 minutes of opening in the glass the nose is indeed tannic cherry skin. Musty and such, but that fruit profile is obvs right up front. I would say that the same is true on the front palate. Cherries with immediacy and extremely full fruit. That is what drives my initial rating here. So rich and definitive fruit. Finish not real refined but it’s only been 15 minutes and this wine has just had the wires jacked out of it Matrix style. It doesn’t know itself yet. Will post some notes in a few hours to see if the landscape has changed. Cheers! — 5 days ago

Clos de l'Oratoire des Papes

Comtes de Neipperg St. Émilion Red Bordeaux Blend

Sticking with St. Emilion for the night. This wine is quite different from the last. Deep dark stewed blue fruits and figs, pencil lead, quite extracted, nose and palate in harmony transmitting similar notes. Even the darker color forshadows the darkness to follow. This wine is oppulent, but without the big fruit forward New World bravado. It stays true to Bordeaux but pushes the limits. Medium plus alcohol and body, slightly drying tannins, long finish. I regret that I have finished my steak because this wine craves a proper food pairing. Excellent and it will only get better.

Château Léoville Barton

Saint-Julien Red Bordeaux Blend 2000

First time I opened one of these 1.5 years ago it was totally closed. Now it’s back open for business and lovely. If blindfolded, based on the perfume alone I would have guessed a Margaux like Palmer as it threw off tons of violets, graphite and blue fruits - gorgeous but a tinge of rough edge that blew off after about an hour. Palate still tasted young but had the complexity you look for in an older claret - spice, leather, graphite, blue fruits and a long finish. This is in a great drinking window but easily has decades of life ahead of it. — 10 days ago

Château Grand Corbin-Despagne

Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Red Bordeaux Blend 2019

75%M, 24%CF & 1%CS. Extremely enticing and seductive wine. Bags of plum fruit and blackberry, oak, nutmeg and licorice. Hardly no tannins, high alcohol with 15%. Huge concentration but very polished. Rebuy. — 6 days ago

Château de Pressac

St. Émilion Grand Cru Red Bordeaux Blend 2017

On the nose, dried flowers, pepper, mint, blackberry, cola, cedar, with a hint of black licorice and or meat. Perhaps one of the most complex bouquets I've experienced in months. The black fruit, cola, mint carry through to the plate. Nicely balanced, medium plus alcohol, medium acidity, dry, medium body. Long finish, smooth tannins. This wine is certainly a pop n pour, but can also improve a bit more with time

Château Cheval Blanc

St. Émilion Red Bordeaux Blend 2001

#MerlotThursday

So a few years ago I started my Merlot Thursday series, where I drink Merlot every Thursday. This is actually the wine that started it all. After watching the movie sideways a few times, I decided to try to get Merlot back in the game.

This wine was on my wishlist for a long long time, and I'm glad I am able to try it, finally.

Medium plus in body with medium acidity.

Showing a beautiful nose with great complexity,

Dry on the palate and elegant.

Showing red and black fruits with earth, wood, spices, peppercorn, coffee, graphites, vegetables and herbs.

Long finish with round tannins and tangy raspberries.

This is a great experience. A delicious Merlot based Bordeaux blend from Saint Emilion. Not from the best vintage, but at this level of wine making, it is almost always gorgeous.

Feels young and would continue to age nicely in the next few decades.

Showing great complexity and mouthfeel. I loved the nose much better than the palate.

Robert Parker 93 points. Wine Spectator 93 points.

I had it after 6 hours of airtime. I really wanted to love it even more, but it is what it is. Got to keep it real.

A blend of 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Franc.

13.5% alcohol by volume.

93 points.

$700.

Château Laroze

Famille Meslin St. Émilion Grand Cru Merlot Blend 2014

Dark ruby colour. Dense nose: oak, blackberry/blackcurrant, cedar, very Bordeaux. Palate, supple, balanced, medium-bodied, with rounded tannins. Final average duration. Correct for its price. Classic style: the perfect Saint-Émilion à Papa. Not my favourite style but for its price, it's correct.

Robe rubis sombre.

A great value BDX, I don't own any '80's, but just extracted '96 & '00 from storage. Hopes are dashed for '96, but'00 should be wonderful, if not closed...

Severn, have not tried the 96 & 00 as the 82 & 86 were the only vintages I purchased in qty of Talbot based on RP’s notes. Cheers!

Thanks Ron. Our BDX buying started mid-90's, for better or worse. All our pre-90's stuff was careful acquisitions, and we've been served well by that strategy.
