St Desir

Château Gruaud Larose

Saint-Julien Red Bordeaux Blend 1989

1989 vintage. 375 ml format. Good fill but cork had some red streaks all the way up to the top and it was difficult to remove the top part of the "fused" foil. Decanted and tasted over the course of three hours. Expected sed. Light-medium body. Nose on point with the vintage/age and didn't seem abused/mistreated. Flavor profile a mishmash of chunky and resolved. Ultimately, came in slightly short on the balance ledger side. Lean, judicious fruit okay but not totally reconciled with the final exam. If enjoyed from a 750 ml format, thinking it might climb up to a 9.1 currently. Maybe. A maggie format (or larger) might reveal a revelation. 12.9.23. — 2 days ago

Pierre Gonon

Saint-Joseph Syrah 2017

Is there a better SJ on the planet? This had a shoe polish, glycerin note with a silky, elegant texture showing black cherry, raspberry, black olive, sweet & savory spices, graphite & violets. — 18 hours ago

To answer your question...probably not.

Agreed. Only the Trollat is better and they’re rarer than hen’s teeth and 10x the cost. These are made from the same vines as far as I’m aware and they’re as good as the very best Northern Rhône’s. Our palates are, as usual, aligned

Château Beychevelle

Saint-Julien Red Bordeaux Blend

This Grand Vin Beychevelle is in a beautiful window, like most 2005’s that I would characterize as brilliantly elegant as opposed to brut strength. Medium to full-bodied, with soft tannins, texture and purity. — 4 days ago

Château Léoville-Las Cases

Grand Vin de Leoville du Marquis de las Cases Saint-Julien Red Bordeaux Blend 1986

Plummy, blackberry, dried currants, mulberry, lavender, cedar, tobacco and smoke.
Smoky graphite and mineral opening with fully integrated tannins and overall cohesion. Lovely floral and berry mix with mulberry, cassis and currant, lavender, rose, and violet. Strong showing on a 38 year old wine.

This is really good!
Beautiful mixture of traditional Bordeaux secondary aromatics, powdery tannines, supporting refreshing acidity and modern-day fruit purity and cleanliness.
Wonderful wine.

Saint-Julien Red Bordeaux Blend 2013

Black berry, black cherry green pepper and blue berry favors. Vanilla and cedar aromas. Dry, high acidity. Medium alcohol. High tannings. Full body. Amazing with a New York steak dinner. — 20 hours ago

Château Cos d'Estournel

Saint-Estèphe Red Bordeaux Blend 2005

2005 vintage. Decanted and tasted immediately and through 3 hours. Great fill/appropriate aging cork. Medium sed. Noticeably dark color. Any trace of the usual Cos baby fat for the first decade+ after release long gone geek. Interesting. This was a lean, mean, street-fighting machine with "minerality" to spare. Intense. Compact. Unsure if it will continue to menace in the next decade of life or retreat into a reclusive, "turtling" period. Best guess? Street-fighter par excellence. Regardless of taking the high or low road, it's not devolving into a drink 'em if you got 'em any time soon scenario. Thanksgiving 11.23.23. — 18 days ago

Château Cheval Blanc

St. Émilion Red Bordeaux Blend 2005

I had the CB 05 just about a year ago. Might be some bottle variation but this one felt a bit more raw and green than my previous encounter. Still amazing. Just a small observation. — 17 days ago
