Sangiovese

Tenuta Greppo (Biondi-Santi)

Riserva Brunello di Montalcino Sangiovese 2010

Annata Biondi-Santi. This is absolutely delicious. Always special from this producer. Love the color. Classic Sangiovese. Orange rimmed next to the pale red. Balanced between some grippy but delicate tannins and approachable fruit. The nose has some spice and some earth but they don’t bring a kick so much as depth. The bottom line is you can tell it’s great because the wine drinks so fast! — 6 days ago

De'Ricci

Sor Aldo Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Sangiovese 2017

Incredible. Vibrant punchy wine with deep dark plum, dark cherry and these earthy undernotes typical for the Montepulciano Vino noble wines. Mind blowing pairing our ‘from scratch bruschettas’. — 6 days ago

Castello di Gabbiano

Gran Selezione Bellezza Chianti Classico Sangiovese 2016

Terrific now but could easily go several more years. Dense, precise fruit and earth in the nose. A little vanilla. Savory and focused in the mouth. Tannins and acids balanced for the future. — a day ago

Montevertine

Le Pergole Torte Sangiovese 2014

Certainly one of the best representations of Sangiovese there is, the 2014 vintage is perfect for my tastes with stunning elegance and transparency, almost Burgundian in style. It wafts a seductive and perfumed bouquet of cool wild berry fruit with blood orange, baking spice and roses. The palate has impeccable detail and focus, with a silky texture, smooth tannins and a long and vibrant finish. Excellent already, with a long life ahead! — 8 days ago

Fuligni Brunello di Montalcino Sangiovese 2012

Popped and poured; no formal notes. A little shy upon opening but after 30min of air, this was bangin’! Montmorency cherry, orange peel, black tea, dry dusty earth, spices. Firm structure. Still quite youthful but undeniably delicious. A wonderful accompaniment to pasta, marinara and panzanella. Drinking very well now with a little air and should continue to do so for another 10+ years. — 7 days ago

Marchesi Antinori

Badia A Passignano Gran Selezione Chianti Classico Sangiovese 2012

Big cherry, ripe and full, Tuscan leather. Bad vintage, great wine. Antinori knows what they’re doing. The age helps. — 6 days ago

Tenuta Greppo (Biondi-Santi)

Brunello di Montalcino Sangiovese 2013

Really quite a fantastic Brunello from an obviously great producer. In a great place at ~9 years but no rush. Lots of refined red fruit on the nose. Manages to get the balance and tension between fruit, earth, and acid nearly perfect. Finish is slightly less expansive and long than I was hoping, and the tannins are a bit unintegrated. But those are nits - delicious and thoroughly enjoyable. Also appreciate the 13.5%. — 14 days ago

Ca' Rozzeria

Barberino Val D'Elsa Chianti Classico Sangiovese 2019

This Chianti Classico doesn’t say it’s from a particular commune. Just a straight Chianti Classico. The modest nose features dark cherry, warm moist gravel, savory dark minerality. A fairly low-toned palate displays some dark cherry, but it’s mostly earthy (stony gravel) and savory flavors that prevail. Vibrant acids and some youthful but soft tannin seem to indicate that this will get better in a year or two, but it’s nice with dinner, if a bit vigorous, right now. Neither the cork nor the bottle say the winery that provided the wine for this Garagiste private label, but if you look up the winery number on the back and Google it, you come up with an Italian government document that says Casa Emma (a very good estate). — 11 days ago

Solid Garagiste label, for sure! The price point is spot on.

Il Marroneto

Brunello di Montalcino Sangiovese 2016

Beautiful. Baking spice nose. Cherry, cinnanom, clove. Pleasant acidity, super spherical on the palate. Long finish. Absolutely stellar. Near top of my scale.

Really nice but probably needs a few more years. Dark, low-toned fruit, earthy terracotta scents. Savory and fairly big in the mouth. Tannins soft but abundant. — a day ago
