Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2015

We were fortunate to visit Ceja Vineyards in April where we were introduced to the Ceja family’s gorgeous wines. πŸ™

We wanted to open a bottle to celebrate and recognize National Hispanic Heritage month. Following are the notes we took at the time, which remain true today:

Ceja is a Mexican-American family owned winery producing wines from both Napa and Sonoma valleys. β€œIn one generation the Ceja family has gone from immigrant vineyard workers to grape growers and winery owners.” πŸ’ͺ πŸ‡²πŸ‡½ πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ

We loved learning about the inspiring background of this winery and family’s devotion to excellence. πŸ’•πŸ’•

The wines are designed to be paired with food (especially, though not exclusively, traditional Mexican cuisine), but are delicious on their own, too.

The 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa Valley is full, velvety, and rich with a lot of ripe blackberry, cassis, and black cherry πŸ’ characteristics. Aged for 36 months in French oak, it has dark chocolate, nutmeg, and clove notes. Also leather and anise.

Beckstoffer Dr. Crane Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2012

After my annual Napa trip, and a few days home of drying out, I wanted a well aged Napa cab to bring me back in.

I gave this a 3hr double decant before trying. I snuck a small glass on opening and it was sporting an uber youthful bite and not much on the finish. After I gave it time, it really fleshed out and bulked up quite a bit. Poured alongside a 2012 Alpha Omega Beckstoffer Missouri Hopper, the Myriad was the group favorite, but it obviously depends on a style preference. The AO was more elegant and finesse driven whereas the Myriad was powerful. Had a classical DrCrane scorched earth flair on the nose but plenty of ripe red and black fruits alongside mocha, dark baking spices and sweet toasted oak (very much in the background). The palate was licorice, tar, and mixed dark berry pie with fine grained tannin on the finish. I’d say this is now in a prime window if you can give it time, but I’m hard pressed to say this gets better…I think it just gets different.

Snowden

Lost Vineyard Merlot 2017

A really nice introduction to Snowden Vineyards with this one. Deep cherry color with a thin rim. The amount of earth on the nose is really nice. Graphite and soft red cherries leads to just about the right amount of cedar. Juicy blueberries take the lead after a heavy decant.

Single vineyard Napa Merlot with a splash of Cabernet Sauvignon thrown in just for good measure. Medium bodied with tannins on the supple side. 14.0 but doesn’t get the balance off. Nice acidity and structure. The palate mirrors the nose with brambly fruit and toasty wood elements. Long finish with spices and herbs. Next time your dumb friend starts quoting Sideways, give them this.

High expectations and a decent aperitif wine. Very sweet vanilla and oaky. I mean. More than Caymus. Crazy. Kinda like drinking candy. Not a lot of depth but fruit was good. Liked it but once steaks arrived - it was time to move on to Cade Howell β€” 2 days ago

Beckstoffer Las Piedras Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2017

Time for my #FridayCabernetfix.

This is a gorgeous Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa Valley. Tasty and spicy. Delicious and extracted. A very typical Cabernet for the region, but oh so yummy.

Dry and full bodied with medium acidity and long legs.

Showing black fruits with cedar, vanilla, leather, earth, chocolates, tobacco, spices, graphite, dark coffee and peppercorn.

Very fruity on the palate and elegant. Well balanced with nice complexity.

Good right out of the bottle, and better with airtime (3 hours).

I've heard many people trash the 2017 vintage in California. So far I've not seen that to be true, and this is a great example of that.

This 4 year old is still very young, and would age nicely in the next 10 to 20 years.

Good by itself or with food. Will pair nicely with BBQ Meats. I paired it with grilled Lamb chops.

14.9% alcohol by volume.

Dominus Estate

Dominus Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2004

Classic Cabernet descriptors of Cedar, Tobacco, Red and black fruits and a herbal note. Lovely on the palate, drinking at its peak with excellent balance - smooth, fluid, resolved tannins. One could easily pick this as a Left Bank Bordeaux in a blind tasting. Shows more French restraint than the full blown Napa style for me. Medium + weight palate with balance and concentration. Probably my favourite Napa Valley Cabernet though admittedly I have not tried some of the big guns like Harlan. Post script: A blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Cabernet Franc, and 7% Petit Verdot. No Merlot was used in the blend for 2004. β€” 7 days ago

Reserve Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 1991

Reached back in the cellar for this one. The cork was totally saturated - was really nervous that the wine was dead - but it was spectacular. Could not believe how well this was drinking at 30 years. And it persisted for the entire time we enjoyed this on Friday night (along with a killer grilled flat iron steak). Totally old-school Napa…and it was fantastic! β€” 7 days ago

Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2015

Time for my #FridayCabernetfix. Here is a gorgeous Cabernet Sauvignon.

Dark ruby/Inky in color with a reddish rim.

Fruity nose of blueberries, blackberries, black currants, Mediterranean spices, light cedar, chocolates, vanilla, earth, leather, tobacco leaf, wild flowers, black pepper and coffee.

Full bodied and smooth with medium acidity and long legs.

Dry on the palate with black currants, blackberries, light cedar, licorice, cola, chocolates, tobacco, herbs, light vanilla, spices, earth, peppercorn and leather.

Long finish with fine grained tannins and tangy raspberries.

This is a delicious Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa Valley.

Rich, but not too much in your face. Nicely balanced with lots of elegance. Fruit forward with nice complexity and mouthfeel.

This is a great example of a young wine with a wonderful nose, without too many secondary notes. Very impressive.

Needed an hour to open up, but much better after 2 hours in the decanter.

I had the 2014 vintage not too long ago, and I liked this even better.

This 6 year old is already delicious, and will continue to age nicely in the next 15 years.

Good by itself as a sipping wine, and will pair nicely with a big piece of steak as well. I paired it with a charcuterie board of meats and cheeses.

A blend of 96% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Petit Verdot and 1% Merlot. Aged for 28 months in French oak barrels.

14.5% alcohol by volume.

Benchland Select Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2001

Nose has wet cedar, dried black cherry, blackberry compote, black currant must, dry earth and (light) cigar box.

Palate has spiced cherry, spicy oak/cedar, blackberry jam, chocolate powder and notable but fine tannins.

My prior notes stated a wait until 2021+ before our next bottle...TBH I never looked at my notes before selecting this bottle tonight, so πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™‚οΈ. Now that we're at 2021, there's noted improvement and I calmly suggest future bottle (there's only one left) should be between 2026-2031, as this is holding just fine.

In following to my prior comment on this bottle; We have a love/hate relationship with Wine Spectator whom tasted this at 80 pts in 2005. I fully disagree (FU), but do agree there have been 'better' vintages on this vineyard site. (We also have the better vintages 😁 in waiting.)

Decanted 4H, notes at ~5H.

Paired to 'vintage' ribeye's and local grilled corn. Our favorite beef 'dealer' aka farmer, Kinderhook Farm (Valatie, NY) has an interesting program of holding some of their cattle for more than a year, our cuts tonight are from a 5 YO steer. A brief 6m grill and wonderfully medium-rare cuts at ~135Β°F after resting. Great depth of flavor, less of the grass fed notes we get with the regular (youthful) cuts, just delicious.

Ark Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2010

A dark ruby red for sure. Cassis, red fruit and perfume blast off the nose with notes of sandalwood, menthol and chocolate espresso. Taste β€” smooth, concentrated and dense giving it its textured layers. Dark cherry plum, spice and vanilla are the initial flavors on the palate followed by spice, graphite and minerals adding to its med-long finish. Tannins are sweet and resolved.
