La Petite Ferme

Barra of Mendocino

Petite Sirah 2017

Deep purple in color with a short purplish/ reddish rim.

Strong nose of blackberries, black plums, black cherries, licorice, cedar, spices, tobacco leaf, vanilla, light mint, chocolates, coffee, mocha, light alcohol and peppercorn.

Full bodied with medium plus acidity and long legs.

Dry on the palate with blackberries, black currants, plums, cooked cherries, vanilla, tobacco, oak, licorice, spices, light earth, chocolates, peppercorn and dark coffee.

Long finish with firm tannins and tangy cherries.

This is a very tasty Petite Sirah from California. Showing nice complexity with a nice mouthfeel.

Drinks well right out of the bottle, and gets better as he opens up, and shows structure and complexity.

Still young and needs a few years in the bottle to mature properly and soften up, although I really enjoyed it as it is now.

Would be nice to revisit it in 5 years. Has a good potential to get to 94+ points.

Tangy and interesting, rich and Jammy.

Aged in French oak barrels (30% new). Organic.

14.5% alcohol by volume.

92 points.

$22.

Hayne Vineyard Petite Syrah 2013

2020 is a strange year and my experience with this still young Petite Syrah fit that trend. Normally, I’d expect a big wine with decades of cellar potential like this one to be reserved at first and then open with air, especially when opened this early in its lifecycle. This one came out on the first sip like gangbusters — perfumed, tons of dark berries and currants, lavender and minerality with surprisingly soft tannins. Wow! But instead of opening up even more, it gradually disappeared and lost much of it character — from outstanding to good in the course of a dinner. Still looking forward to checking in on it — or having my kids do so — 10, 20 and even 40 years from now — 6 days ago

9.1

This is from Spring Mountain of Napa Valley. Opulent dark fruit core without being too jammy. The full body is well toned, with savory soft palate and silky tannins.

Posted a Rose too. I was there to taste Montagu primarily. Elyse is where Montagu shows their wines. However, Elyse is where 6 other labels make their wine. We ended up tasting a sampler of nearly all of the labels.

Never been to the winery or their tasting room. Thanks for the information. That’s good to know.

Petit Reserve Napa Valley Petite Sirah 2016

Deep ruby color; average viscosity. Wild blueberries/plum and dried currant, vanilla and sweet wood, a bit of black pepper and a touch of clove(?) Dry, prominent tannin, medium acidity. Quite nice for the price if you ask me. — 10 days ago

Alpine Roots

Valais Petite Arvine 2019

100% Petite Arvine. Star bright deep-ish gold. Abundant, wildly aromatic nose of orange pulp and peel and white and yellow flowers. Medium full palate yields similar flavors adding a hint of white pepper and anise on the finish. Medium “just enough” acidity makes for a sturdy winter white (of course) that makes a perfect alternative to “yet another Chardonnay.” Enjoy with pot pies, casseroles, or roasted fowl or pork. Drink now though 2025. — 16 days ago

Relentless Napa Valley Syrah Petite Sirah 2016

Wine honors long-time Shafer Winemaker Elias Fernandez & his relentless pursuit of quality. A blend of 90% Syrah & 10% Petite Sirah, a more bucolic grape than Syrah, providing for lush & rich wine. Aged for 30 months, 100% new French oak, deep Ruby with aromas of concentrated dark berry fruit & hint of smoky pepper spice. Layered meaty flavors of blackberry, cherry & blueberry explode on palate & subtle tannins relax to a nice long finish, great mouthfeel. One of the best Syrah’s I tasted. Aging well! — 2 days ago

Geyserville Sonoma County Zinfandel Blend 2017

RP 90 14.5% abv. HKD 598 Medium-dark ruby, moderately exp After some time open, the wine relaxed and more layers came out; a bit of loaminess, a touch herbal, a hint of gravelly minerality, some cocoa powder, and dense purple and black fruits. The quality of that fruit on the palate remained somewhat confected and perhaps on the verge of being syrupy, but the acidity is good and it’s not flabby or extracted. I can’t say I loved this, but saved enough to see if it improves on day 2. As is, hold, hold, hold.
ressive aromas. Ripe plum, a little black pepper, sage ... enjoyable, I'll try to be more patient with my next one.
