Villa Antinori Toscana Sangiovese Blend

Pulled from my cellar, popped and poured and presented double-blind to the group. In the glass, the wine appears a deep garnet with a translucent core, a slightly orange rim and some signs of fine sediment on the glass. On the nose, the wine is mature with initial notes of Tootsie Roll and old leather bound books. However after about 40min in the glass, the nose brightens up and begins to show more varietal characteristics: cherries, desiccated flowers, fennel, damp earth, leather and espresso. On the palate, the wine is bone dry and the tannin’s are still quite firm. Acid is medium+ and the finish is long. Alcohol is medium. A very lovely mature wine! Guesses were all in Italy but further north in Piemonte (Barbaresco mostly) and much, much younger with most settling on late 90’s. I don’t drink a lot of modern wines from Antinori but this was quite the charmer with 41 years of age on it. If anyone has any well stored examples, drink now with about 40min of air. That being said, there is enough life for these to soldier on for another 5-10 but this is very clearly in the twilight of its life. Something else of note: the cork was extracted completely intact. 👅Earthy with cassis & plum, volcanic ash & fresh tobacco. Mod complexity. Long dry finish with tannic pull

DAY 10
👃Less mint & more cooking spice vs Day 1
👅Volcanic earth and graphite with purple fruit, dark chocolate, tobacco, & licorice

Drinking well as a fruit forward wine. Will improve as tannins soften. Love the volcanic notes that dominate

Roceno Terre Siciliane Nero d'Avola 2020

Label says Nero D’Avola, Delectable says white Grillo?

Anyway, dark-ass wine. As dark as blood at least. Smells woody and like dried cherries or cranberries maybe. Flavors are dense and cherry driven. Bite to it. Licorice in the mix too. Very dry. This is a good Sicilian red with some serious pop and character. Think I’m getting a hint of cassis in there too. If you like the rich reds of the southern part of Italia, (primativo and Barberas come to mind), this will do wonders for ya.

Tristo White Blend 2020

Wrong label on the bottle
This was the white Tristo
Made 100% with trebbiano, 20 days of maceration on the skins
Indeed texturally nearly a red, but we put it in the orange bracket for sure
Firstly we notice the mineral side, then everything else...kind of little red berries, blonde tabacco, coconut cream...most definitely not a standard white.
It's decently long, perhaps a touch of alcohol is overfelt
Interesting, to keep an eye on for next vintages
Ingredients: trebbiano grapes..that's it.

Terre Siciliane Nerello Mascalese 2020

I looooved this 2020 Donna Ninetta Nerello Mascalese Terre Siciliane IGP that I bought from Laithwaites.

Nerello Mascalese is the grape variety 🍇 and after trying this one, I want to hunt out more.

In the glass it’s a silky cherry red. It’s fresh and juicy on the nose with plenty of red berry fruits, spice and herbs. On the palate it’s über refreshing and juicy. Flavoursome and smashable.

All opinions are based on my own taste buds. Wine is subjective & always evolving, so make sure you drink what you enjoy!

Praruar Terre Siciliane Catarratto 2016

Beautiful and unique wine that’s been a real change compared to my recent tries. The unfiltered amber hue is striking in the glass, folding into pinks and reds. Candied ginger and nectarine peel mash together in a winter cocktail like profile, but are held together nicely with brown sugar, some malic flavors, and a soft floral touch. Cacao and tropical notes reach out in nice undertones. Structure is great for 6 years old. Evolved slowly with each sip.

Excellent with Asian flavors.

La Crotta Spanna Coste della Sesia Nebbiolo 2019

N: Alpine woodland wonderland, it’s like bark, leaves, sous bois, with cherries lurking in the background. Some star anise and cinnamon.
P: Light textured but definitely chewy, strong in the mouth and long. Nebbiolo indeed. Tannins to burn with faint tar and lots of umami, savoriness. Gamy,
delicious. I’ve had it open for a couple of hrs. waiting on more. Later, dried rose petals in cherry liqueur. Second day, much softer.Lots of shoe leather (worn) on the nose.

V For Vittorio Trebbiano - Fiano Blend 2020

Not extreme,but definitely an orange wine
70% trebbiano 30% fiano
It's a dangerous drop, one you can't stop pouring
Make sure you have a back up plan cause it honestly evaporates quickly
Little oxidative notes, fruit, nuts(noisette especially which i find often in this style of trebbiano),spices, hay, a toch of honey and if you resist swirling i am sure there's more, but i didn't
Fairly long
To buy again for summer nights
