Sauternes Sémillon-Sauvignon Blanc Blend 1983

Exceptional. In a beautiful place too. Apricot, quince, honey and dried mandarin peel on the nose. So very long on the finish. Liquid silk — a month ago

Prior tasting notes apply. I really like this wine. Aromas are very powerful on this complex, multi-dimensional wine. — 3 months ago

Viña Tondonia Reserva Rioja Blanco Malvasia Viura 2009

Tasted blind. Since the list of white wines was known to me, the guess is obvious here. Unique and amazing style. Oxidative notes, bread and butter, baked apples, honey, nuts and mushrooms. It even has notes of flowers and grapefruit. Complex and well balanced with right volume and long aftertaste. IMO it lacks evolution, but amazing aftertaste with flavours of mushrooms, apples and honey. Happy to taste it again in almost a year. — 3 months ago

Domaine Huet

Le Haut-Lieu Sec Vouvray Chenin Blanc

Aroma of fresh flowers. Green apple, honey, citrus pith, crushed chalk. Bright acidity. Second day rounder, baked apples. Will (try to) let this age much more in the future. — a month ago

Château Guiraud

Sauternes Sémillon-Sauvignon Blanc Blend 2008

Special stuff (and special bottle acquired at the chateau in ‘16, a magical place). Lighter and less sweet vs what I was expecting. Millions of peaches (and apricots) & wildflower honey. Lychee. White pepper, candied ginger, orange peel and mandarin orange on the finish. Slightly muted but delicate florals on the nose. Bottle probably still too cold. Either way, great with baked peaches & vanilla custard.

Great stuff, and great value. Whenever I happen across aged bottles for sale I try to acquire, always a good move.

It pains me to think about Sauternes as a value because it takes so much effort and expense to make these beautiful (and woefully under appreciated wines), but you’re right, they are values—and better with age. After 10+ years, the oak is completely subsumed, the interesting tertiary notes are beginning to peak through and there’s still so much freshness and bright fruit.

Domaine des Baumard

Savennières Chenin Blanc 2018

Had this in a restaurant. Really like this Wine, tasted ‘18 again after 8 months. Pale lemon with ripe white fruits and wet stone aromas. On the palate ripe apple and peach, very complex, lively acidity. Long finish ending with mineral and sweet honey character, aged well, tasting great! — 4 months ago

Château Climens

Barsac 1er Cru Sémillon-Sauvignon Blanc Blend 2009

Delectable Wine

The 2009 Climens is much more vibrant on the nose than the 2010 with lovely dried honey, quince, saffron and light chamomile aromas. It blossoms in the glass and gains intensity with each swirl. The palate is very well balanced with a touch of marmalade on the entry, quite tensile from start to finish with a rather long, viscous finish. This is just beginning to motor. Tasted at the Climens vertical at the château in April 2022. (Neal Martin, Vinous, August 2022)

Château de Beaucastel

Vieilles Vignes Châteauneuf-du-Pape Roussanne 2000

In a great spot. Appears to have really shed some baby fat, the sucrosity of the fruit diminshing and the mineral and tertiary notes coming to the front. Lavishly textured, great length, a wonderful accompaniment to an array of vegetable dishes. Pineapple upside cake, roasted nuts, cooked yellow plum, marmalade, garrigue, cruahed stones, yellow blossoms, marzipan and honey, cream, olive oil. — 3 months ago
