A blend of Tempranillo with 10% Mazuelo and Graciano, with aging, 50% in new French oak. Deep Ruby with ripe red and black fruit aromas and toasty spice. The palate shows plum and blackberry flavors with smoke, cacao and spice. Vivid acidity, firm ripe tannins, integrated lending to a medium+ finish ending with some earthy notes. This Cabernet Franc, made with grapes from Agrelo, Luján de Cuyo, is one of the best that Argentina has to offer. Aged for 18 months in French barrels, half of them new, it is garnet in hue. The nose delivers intense aromas with inviting, well-defined notes of roasted red pepper, black currant, sour cherry and pepper. The wood comes out in the mouth, where it brings softness, volume, muscle and outline. This is pure but elegantly packaged power with a sustained, flavorful finish. This Pichon-Baron was in the earliest peak of its window, pure ✏️ and graphite cigar box nose, rich, intense, leading cassis, tar and a mineral and wonderfully tannic trip over the palate and a long, 40 second finish that was reminiscent dry red clay. Good news: I have 11 more in the case I cracked last night. Bad news: I’ll be in my 60’s before these open up and the secondary stuff really starts to show. — 6 days ago

Smoky caramel-mocha nose shows broom straw and bamboo, vanilla bean, graphite, tea biscuit, cardamom, cinnamon-apple, attic nutmeg and cilantro. Rich and chocolate-y mouthfeel with warm cinnamon heat is exemplary. First taste puts the dully oaken nose to shame for insufficient suggestion. This thing brings a support beam of heavy oak in abundance. Cedar, pepper, cinnamon, nutmeg, cardamom, allspice, tobacco; the gangs all here. Coffee is the magnet in the middle; two sugars, black, a millisecond before the heavy cream and drizzled caramel. Buckwheat, buckthorn, and dried pineapple are the lightning in this dark storm. Add ginger and dried lime and a drop of Fernet Branca and you’ve nailed it. Very nice aged Rioja. Probably plenty more years in this but drinking very nicely now. Nose is dark fruit, vanilla, cedar and light licorice. In the glass, vibrant with violet edges, very fresh. Palate is a blend of dark fruit, cherry, vanilla and leather, medium tannins and a lovely long sour candy finish. Not a regular choice for me but this was really good. — 16 days ago
