Domaine Clos du Rouge Gorge (Cyril Fhal)

Côtes Catalanes White Blend 2023

Light golden in color.

Nose of citrus, peaches, yellow apples, spices, light earth and herbs.

Medium plus in body with medium acidity.

Dry on the palate with lemons, red and green apples, minerals, light grapefruits, herbs, spices, earth, light oak and light sea salt.

Long finish with limes and light almonds.

This is a delicious white blend from Southern France. Round and rich. Elegant and nicely balanced. Complex and interesting.

As it warms up, it feels like a white Burgundy. So interesting.

This Single Vineyard is drinking beautifully now, and will continue to age nicely in the next 5 to 7 years.

Good right out of the bottle, and better after 20 minutes of airtime.

A great sipping wine that paired nicely with food too.

A blend of 68% Grenache Gris and 32% Macabeo. Aged on its lees, in used large French oak barrels for 14 months. Unfiltered and unfined. A small production of less than 2,000 bottles.

14% alcohol by volume.

92 points.

$50.

We had at Cyril Lignac’s restaurant in Paris for father’s day.
Tell tale Vosne aux Malconsorts, very accessible now but with very many years ahead of it. We are enthusiastic about it !

Henschke

Louis Eden Valley Sémillon 2023

At the Henschke weekend at Spicers Maryvale. Brief notes. 100% Semillon grown on the Henschke Eden Valley vineyard. From 50 year old vines planted by Stephen’s father, Cyril. Very pale in colour. Aromatics of ripe grapefruit. Granny Smith apple on palate with a slightly soapy texture. Different to Hunter Valley Semillon and more approachable at a young age. — 2 years ago

Château La Croix de Pez

Saint - Estèphe Red Bordeaux Blend 2022

2022 vintage. The back label sends you to the website of Producta Vignobles, a huge coopérative négociant company, the owners seem to be Marie Guyonnaud et Cyril Frémy. 60% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 5% Cabernet Franc. Lead pencil and cassis. Medium-bodied, with a pronounced minerality, somewhat hiding the fruit. Good value Saint-Estèphe ( 13 euros in a supermarket ), if a little lean at this stage. Abv. 13,5%. Suffers from the comparison with the 2023 Lilian Ladouys tasted alongside. Better the next day. — 7 months ago

Cyril Henschke Eden Valley Red Bordeaux Blend 2019

Continuing on with the extensive array of Henschke wines we tasted last weekend. This is their premium Cabernet based blend which is grown on the Cyril Henschke vineyard in the Eden Valley. Matured in 32% new and 68% seasoned French oak hogsheads for 18 months prior to bottling. Brief notes; Named after Stephen’s father Cyril. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. First produced in 1978. A lovely perfume of cassis, red currant, bay leaf and dark chocolate. I used to buy this Cuvée regularly 15 plus years ago. — 2 years ago

A new producer for me that has been very impressive. Floral & elegant with a perfumed nose of dark red fruits, meat, iron, spice, olive, pepper, graphite & violets. Small production that is hard to source — a year ago

Julius Eden Valley Riesling 2023

Still trying to catch up with all of the Henschke wines we tasted a week ago at Spicer’s Peak Lodge. This was a classic Eden Valley Riesling from Henschke’s own Eden Valley vineyard. Aromatics of Lime and talc with a note of jasmine. Stephen again emphasised the quality of the 2023 vintage. Cyril was instrumental in developing the Henschke Riesling vineyards back in the 1950’s. — 2 years ago
