Calera Selection Doc's Ranch Vineyard Pinot Noir 2018

One of the few domestic Pinot producers I really enjoy. Close proximity to the coast and whole cluster use normally gets me intrigued, especially when you see ABVs in the 12-13 range.

Pop and poured for a quarterly wine dinner. Theme was domestic Pinot and Sauvignon Blanc (I also opened a 2023 Mowe SB…lights out good). 13.6ABV. Winner of the night was a 2000 Marcassin.

Translucent red/purple in the glass. Gorgeous and fragrant…lovely floral notes on the nose (potpourri spice, violets). The palate sports crunchy red and black berry fruits, herbs/green and spice from the whole cluster use…some mint and black tea too. Bright and nervy acidity with nice mid-palate depth (can be tough to do at lower ABVs). Followed over two days and held strong. Lovely.

Compared to the ‘17 Doc’s Swan & Calera, this showed a touch more weight and power with a little less complexity at the finish. Very much enjoyed both for different reasons.

The wine opened up quite a bit after decanting for an hour or so. Great tawny color, notes of sour cherry and raisins, long aftertaste. Will integrated tannins. An awesome bottle! — 9 months ago

Ryan Jentoft Vineyard Pinot Noir 2020

2020 vintage. Swan & Calera clones if correctly remembering. Some chunky/earthy/grounding power frontal and mid-palate slightly thinning out on a concentrated finish. Really nice acidity/tannins for balance with the fruit punch. 4.13.23. — 3 years ago

Failla

Hirsch Vineyard Pinot Noir

Couldn't find entry, logging Stella Sonoma Coast Pinot 2017 here: 225 and Calera clones. Elevated acidity, med tannins. Cola nuts, faint herbs, red plums, blackberry, med+/elevated concentration, overripe strawberry, black tea bag, lavender, tomato, stony characters. ~13% abv. 2017 was super hot in Sonoma, >100 degree heat spikes in June-July cause vines to shut down, rapid ripening more akin to Oregon of erratic growing season (whereas usually California boasts of constant long growing season). Gravel loam soil. 10-40% whole cluster, hand punchdowns, stem inclusion. Foot treaded. WC raises pH as high acid -> more stem inclusion to balance the pH. Failla picks on pH at ~23-24 Brix which would be a bit too high. — 4 years ago

Delicate, a kiss of sweetness with an herbal note. Minerality, of the warm earth, a beauty and elegance, still very much alive. Texturally and structurally beautiful. For this vintage, he hit it out of the park! — 6 months ago

Tablas Creek Vineyard

Antithesis Chardonnay 2005

A tasting of six aged white Rhônes, including 20 and 35-year-old Hermitages vs Chapoutier Saint-Joseph Blancs from Les Granits and a 19-year-old Esprit from Tablas Creek, Beaucastel's sister winery in Paso Robles, as well as one of the first great Viogniers to come out of California, the 2009 Calera Mount Harlan. The Tablas Creek held up well against these heavyweights, coming in second place. — 2 years ago
