Ca Del Console

The Modern Syrah 2017

A Santa Barbara County Proprietary Red Wine. Unfiltered and unfined. Entirely constructed of Estrella-clone Syrah from two ends of the Santa Rita Hills and a sprinkling of Viognier. Native-yeast fermented with 40% whole cluster inclusion and raised in large neutral barrels for 26-months. Matthias’ expression of great Syrah from a great Syrah growing region, cool coastal vineyards north of Santa Barbara. Recommended to a little above cellar temperature.

Young boysenberries. Steeping Darjeeling tea. A hint of barbecue smoke drifts by.

The color of a deep burgundy Chrysler Cordoba. Big, velvety mouthfeel, but not Corinthian leather.

Taste: Black cherries, just before 100% ripe. A touch of blueberry pie, but savory, not sweet. Finish: A finish of black pepper with a touch of cocoa nib at the last few touches of finish. Juicy, bustling tannins right to the point where you think they’re a touch too bold, but then the finish reaches over and says “I believe you were mistaken”.

Jazz trumpeter Jeremy Pelt with the track “I’ve Just Seen Her” on his album “The Art of Intimacy”. The Jazz Crusaders with the track “Young Rabbits” from their “Festival Album”, 1966, recorded live at the Newport and Pacific Jazz Festivals.

Napa Valley Petit Verdot 2009

David T

It’s good to follow Winemakers. I follow Charles Hendricks.

100% Petit Verdot in anyone’s hands is tricky. This 09 made by Charles is elegant young and just as it is now. It’s just rounder & softer. It still has teeth but, complex & floral. dark, grippy tarry, round tannins. The darkest of roasted & used expresso grounds, dry earth with dark & brilliant florals. Beautiful acidity and elegant persistent finish.

Cloud Break Wines

California Chardonnay 2018

Color of bubbly light gold. Nose is a trio of roasted nuts, mineral, and ripe tropical fruits, like mangoes, and a bit oaky note. Nose is nice. Taste shows good long lasting acidity, citrusy, oak, a bit salty mineral. Quite light as the fruits notes are not pronounced. Aftertaste of good quality acidity and some more mineral. — 4 days ago

Familiar California Mourvedre 2019

Hits on everything. The fruits, the woods, the meats. It’s what you get when you pair a great California winemaker with his best grape.

Hardy Wallace makes beautiful things happen with Mourvèdre.

Murky, fresh pressed wild blueberries, raspberries, strawberries. Salty thick cut beef jerky. Coffee, cocoa, rosemary stems.

Plush and classically balanced like a real-life checkbook.

@Shay A No surprise as Maggie Harrison (Antica Terra) was working with Manfred at SQN prior to venturing out north.

@Joseph Barsky : Yes, been a fan of hers for a while. Add in Andremily, and that’s one heck of a SQN minded group!

Can also add Brandon Sparks-Gillis at Dragonette to the SQN alumni list.

California Kerner

My first taste of the kerner grape through this Localism Wine from Anon. May be a new favorite. Sourced from Lodi. Loads of apricot, melon, peach and nectarine. Bright acidity and a long finish. I'm a fan. — 13 days ago

Dirty & Rowdy

Chenin Blanc 2019

Fresh off the FedEx...laser focused, pure pleasure... imagine forgetting to sugar your fresh squeezed lemon/lime juice...then adding 50% of your usual. Pucker up and embrace the vibrant acidity, the lip-smacking medium weight, the 12% ABV, and the long 30 second finish. Not a great wine, but so much pure fun... and it “tastes so frigging good.” Bravo Hardy et al! — 11 days ago

Ok... maybe I wrote too soon. Some of the bright Lemonhead flavor shades into slutty, cheesy, mushroomy Funk...92-94.

California Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2010

This definitely needs time to decant and calm before drinking. This is fruit forward, leather/pepper, and medium acid. A solid red blend that will be enjoyable to most, but won’t knock your socks off. — 12 days ago
