Cluricaun 2024

A Portuguese red blend that is juicier, livelier, denser, & more alive than many a bottle 3x the price. Pop rocks for adults, if you’re a child of the 70s. Savory red jelly, pomegranate, underripe red cherries. Low tannin. Exuberant. Truly head turning & for under 14$ I will volunteer to get on my high horse to declare it THE Thanksgiving wine to bring. Wow. — 8 months ago

The No Joke is a blend of 71% and 29% Cabernet. On the nose, big blue & violets florals, gummy fruits of, blueberries, blackberries, black plum, black raspberries, pepper, steep black tea and rich, black soils. On the palate, the wine crisscrosses between the presences Malbec & Cabernet on entry. Liquid violets, creamy fruits of; blueberries, blackberries, black plum, black raspberries. Dark soils, black tea, rich black soils, loamy soils, dry stone, dark & milk chocolate, round thick acidity and thick lush, elegant, blue fruit finish. Photos of the tasting bar in their downtown Walla Walla tasting room, tasting room sitting sitting area and beautiful fruit ready for harvest. Producer history and notes...Ryan Crane founded Kerloo Cellars in 2007. Ryan’s path to winemaking began as a volunteer at Animale Cellars. After leaving Animale Cellars, he worked crush with Marie-Eve Gilla at Forgeron Cellars. Marie-Eve is Gilles (Director of Winemaking & Viticulture) Long Shadows wife and who's wines I'll post soon. He ultimately landed an Assistant Winemaker at Va Piano Vineyards for three years. The influence and support from the Washington wine industry like; Gilla, Justin Wylie of Va Piano, and Steve Brooks of Trust Cellars propelled Ryan forward to where he has found himself today owner and Winemaker at Kerloo Cellars. Oh...if you were wondering how they arrived at Kerloo for the name, it's the sound a crane (bird) makes and of course, Ryan's last name is Crane. — 9 years ago

Marcassin

Marcassin Vineyard Chardonnay 2010

Dan was being very curmudgeonly as he could taste butterscotch in this wine. I say he was right. I'd ALSO say I'll take every last bottle of this he has left and will even volunteer to take them away personally! Poured a medium amber color. Notes of butter and herb om the nose. Entry is overripe stone ground fruits with a nice weighted base. Butterscotch in front and middle but trails away in the finish where this wine just kind of dances more with a tarragon and peach kind of note. The only white I dared to try with the braised pork and pickled peppers. Although neither was a perfect complement, I was shocked at how this one definitely didn't run away! A true Marcassin! If you have these, I think I'd drink now. — 7 years ago

Butterscotch was the common theme around this and while it was there, I don’t see it as a fault when it’s a part of a wine (but when it dominates a wine, different story). This had some signature Marcassin wax, sea salt and roasted & honeyed stone fruits. Delicious.

Reserve St. Helena Cabernet Sauvignon 2008

So this wine beat Harlan, Bond, Colgin, Scarecrow in a blind tasting, scoring in the top bracket with Dalla Valle Maya. Wow! Of all those others, I've only had the pleasure of Colgin. And expert taster though I am not, I also found this comparable to that experience. Speaks classic California Cab to me - nice structure of dark red fruit followed by some cigar/tobacco and finishing with long silky tannins. I volunteer for next blind tasting of this against Screaming Eagle, Harlan, et al.!!! — 11 years ago

Boyd

Oak Knoll District Cabernet Sauvignon 2010

My wife went to the Boyd Vineyard last weekend on a private tour recommended by a colleague. She liked the 2010 Cab, Oak Knoll District so much, she had the vineyard ship a case home for my birthday. extremely smooth even without giving time to breathe. Not overpowered berry or other fruit, dry but without dust on the rim. You will make a good impression if you bring this to the next dinner party invite but volunteer to open on site as you may not find it again. Just returned from a business trip to my French parent company. I did not taste anything better over there. Concerned how the 2011 will fare given how that poor year is shaping up but there are exceptions, — 12 years ago

Can't wait for the 'real' Neighborhood wines coming in a few years. Those will come from grapes grown in the city of San Francisco... and I volunteer my backyard. Meanwhile this test drive is great... nice acidity, balance, and mouthfeel. ... and a bargain, but they didn't make too many barrels so could be hard to find. — 8 years ago

Just prior to his 10th birthday Colby Groom underwent back to back open heart surgeries. Inspired to raise awareness, Colby and his dad, notable winemaker Daryl Groom, created Colby Red as a way to raise funds for heart related charities. Colby is now a seasoned volunteer supporting heart health throughout North America. Colby Red has proudly raised and donated over $500,000 to heart charities across the USA and into Canada. I saw this and couldn't resist the donation! 💖 — 10 years ago
