Own Rooted Field Blend Mourvedre Blend 2018

The theory goes that own rooted vines mature quicker than grafted. Side by side, they produce more concentrated flavors and aroma. Seems so in this case - this 2018 fetus of a wine is a concentrated flavorful paradox of dense and fresh.

Smokey dark berries with all the Syrah herbs. Flavors of cigar, cherry cola, and German chocolate cake. Slippy texture, Trojan horse tannins on top of a big 14%+ ABV.

@Hugh O'Riordan they are vines planted directly into the ground vs grafted. There is a bigger chance for phylloxera with own rooted...which is why grafted became a thing...

Thanks. I’ll ask about the vines during my wine adventures. Hugh

@Hugh O'Riordan Most vitis vinifera globally are grafted to American root stock because it is more resistant to phylloxera. However, phylloxera doesn’t seem to like soils with high concentrations of sand so those vineyards are often unaffected by the louse and, as such, many vines remain ungrafted.

Estate Grown Ballard Canyon Syrah 2016

A gift from my team for Boss’s Day, this was very good. Inky dark magenta, this poured thick and viscous. The nose is exactly what I’ve come to expect from Santa Barbara Syrah - Lavender, licorice, black pepper, a sweet marshmallow thing, and ripe blue fruit. There are some of the typical smoked meat and olive components, but they’re subtle. It’s got firm, grippy tannins, medium acid, and a long finish. There’s no rush on this, and it will be better a few years down the line, but on a cold Tuesday night with my wife’s killer lasagna soup, it was perfect. — 24 days ago

La Croce Santa Ynez Valley Red Blend 2012

This was quite a wine. Serious, but so pleasurable. Such a cool blend of equal parts Syrah and Sangiovese. Really exhibited a lot of classic Bordeaux notes. The Syrah and Sangio melded together and created a really harmonious composite. One of the best integrated wines I've had in some time. Well done. — 2 months ago

Ballard Canyon Roussanne

Much like the Avion from Stolpman but not as tight. Still loving this for the price. Ripe melon and very round quaff with a huge nose characteristic of the grape. — 3 months ago
