Joseph Swan Vineyards

Estate Bottled Sonoma Pinot Noir 1975

These were still the early years for Joe Swan. Andre Tchelistcheff was consulting and a young Joel Peterson was under Swan’s proverbial wing before he launched Ravenswood. It’s getting harder and harder find these gems so this was a real treat.

Popped and poured; enjoyed over the course of a few hours. The 1975 pours, a dull ruby color with a translucent core and rust colored rim; medium viscosity with no staining of the tears and some sediment. On the nose, the wine is vinous with notes of bruised and desiccated strawberry, smoked meat, mushrooms, forest floor, and an intriguing mix of spices. On the palate the wine is dry with medium tannin (integrated) and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long. At 55+, this is stunning and proof that California Pinot Noir does have the capacity to age gracefully when in the hands of a master. Drink now.

Pair really well with spicy fried chicken wing. The versatility of Champagne.

Too bad the Bengals loss, but at least the wine is good.

Domaine Robert Chevillon

Les Perrières Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Pinot Noir

It’s a delight. On the brighter side of ruby, the nose brings a new expression of fleshy cherry as it breathes, and the palate opens in a graceful - yet unmistakable- setting that reveals its home in Nuits St. Georges. The irony of it all is that the vineyard itself bears the name of “infertile land”.
Sampling from this incredible 1’er Cru, there seems to be absolutely ZERO indication of such ‘infertility’. Point. Wing made as concisely as possible: THIS is some fertile juice.

Eisele Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 1985

Drinks more like old BDX than aged Napa. Soft as silk with an ample but not unpleasant helping of bret.
Pair with getting into a heated discussion with your right wing nut of a father who, when asked him to back up his assertion about “absurdly high public sector salaries” 🙄 with facts, responds with a personal attack.

Meredith Estate Russian River Valley Pinot Noir 2009

Wow. Lately I’ve found Merry Edwards isn’t ready to drink upon release and needs some time to age. I’ve intentionally held this and so glad I did. The color is showing some age, but you wouldn’t know it by the taste. It’s just hitting its stride. Thick, juicy cherry fruit, followed by cola and spice. Luscious. Thought this was a good way to follow up SNM while cooking dinner, sitting on my duff, and watching West Wing. — 8 years ago

Saint Dekkera Flanders Oud Bruin

2013 FDR3. Red-hued dark brunette body with bib bubbles, big textured, loose and frothy. Just dud spots left and moth wing scatter of pressed flower residual. Awesome sour cherry, baked persimmon, aged balsamic over steamed carrot, peppercorn, and toasty oak scents disperse, while chutney and pickled apricot take the spotlight, locked in a dark embrace. This may be the perfect sour. Smooth from oak, but sweet with vanillin and cola-malt, and sharpness from grapefruit, sour apricot, sweet potato sugar baked black. Blackened cinnamon-soaked apples, dried, brined bing cherry flavors, grilled lime, with autumnal spice and landscape sensibilities flowing smoothly in between. Astounding. — 7 years ago
