Odyssey Cellars

GlenAyr

Tasmania Shiraz 2019

Continuing on with my Tasmanian Odyssey - this time a cool climate Shiraz. Lovely and semi rich with pepper and spice and only medium weight, but with a plummy note - my style of Shiraz. Loved it. Not dissimilar to a Saint Joseph. — 6 months ago

Kanenas Mavroudi Syrah 2015

Vintage 2015 / Wednesday Meatballsday (4) / why does someone call his wine ‘No one’ ? It is asking for troubles... you might presume. It has to do with Odyssey, when he was trapped by the Cyclops Polyphemus in his cave, he offered the most precious wine and the Cyclops asked for its name. Kanenas means No one. Enfin... good story, but how does it taste? The colour is half transparant, a ruby rim. It seems a very easy wine, comforting, quaffable, hap sap. But drinking with care one discovers a very nice nose, smell of raspberries, quite frivolous. Hints of spices. Made from local grape Mavroudi and Syrah. Paired very well with meatballs, broccoli and baked potatoes. Greece is really interesting. — 3 years ago

Clonakilla

Canberra District Shiraz Viognier 2015

Holy smokes! Really need to get myself a bottle. B&S summed up the wine perfectly:

This is near immaculate. Match a consistently revered wine with a once-in-a-lifetime vintage and what you get is a rare and illusive gem.

Perfectly warm days and cool, steady nights allowed for ideal growing conditions in Clonakilla’s famed vineyards. With the ability to pick fruit at their own leisure, Tim Kirk and his team gained full fruit ripeness, balanced phenolic complexity and even increased the whole bunches to 30% for each ferment. The sensorial odyssey begins with perfumed florals and aromas of spice, charcuterie and wild herbs; before bright red and blue berries emerge on the palate. There’s a line of savoury richness which seamlessly interplays with the wine’s elegant tannin structure, however, what truly marks the experience is the complexity that each mouthful delivers. An immediate classic.

Okanagan Valley Pinot Gris 2020

Odyssey blend. Dark end of a pale gold hue with nice depth of colour in the glass. Notes of ripe pear and maybe a hint of peach or even a more citrus-y tropical fruit in the mix. Maybe a hint of green herbs there as well. Wine is sweet with a very smooth mouthfeel, a little acidity to keep things interesting. Tastes like it smells. All in all, a very tasty glass. — 7 months ago

One of the best NZ Sauvignon Blanc I have tasted this wine has what New Zealand can provide those slightly advanced herbal and grassy notes but it is balanced — 8 months ago

Pleasantly surprised. Wasn’t sure what to expect as this came in the mystery case but drank like a balanced earthy Pinot. Would try this again depending on price. — a year ago

Lighter for a Merlot, a bit more like a Pinot Noir on the palate, but very good. — 4 years ago
