Got the attendant to save my palate and grab me a glass of 09 Dom out of 1st Class.

The Emirates experience is very good overall. The car service pick up is excellent. The comfort in Business Class is quite spacious and comfortable. Service is good. The food was hit or miss depending on what you ordered. Overall, it could be better. Where they really missed; there were no hot towels before meals, wi-fi horrific and the Business Class wine list needs to be much better.

Green apple, slightly bruised Bosc pear, lime candy, light color citrus blend, pineapple, ginger soda, baguette crust, beautiful firm pronounced chalkiness, penetrating grey volcanic minerals, well done acidity and an elegant, rich, well balanced finish that goes on & on.

Paloma

Napa Valley Syrah 1998

Beautiful Syrah from Spring Mountain, savoury aromas and flavors, very French-like if served blind, still has lots of primary redfruits showing, tannins have largely receded, from a partially-shaded 5-acre portion at the bottom of the Paloma vineyard, long finish, I believe the Syrah vines were planted in 1992 and pulled out after the 2001/2002(?) vintage, Barbara and Jim Richards said the farming was more difficult than the Merlot (and smaller amounts of Cabernet Sauvignon) that Paloma is known for and thus they elected to replant (graft? Not sure) more of the other varieties into that plot. While the first vintage of the Syrah (1995) was never commercially released (12 cases produced from 3 year old vines), Jim was kind enough to send me home with 4 bottles, that wine was the best Syrah to EVER come off that vineyard, I was forever in his debt, it was AMAZING. I miss Barbara and Jim, some of the nicest people I’ve ever met in the wine business (I’m NOT in the business myself)!! — 10 months ago

Domaine Coche-Dury (J.F. Coche Dury)

Les Rougeots Meursault Chardonnay 1996

Deep gold color. Sweet, fruit forward nose. Notes of apricot, pineapple, kiwi, white flowers, some baked apples and some tan spice. Rich and round in the mouth. Subtle but very present acidity. Past it’s peak perhaps, but it’s a really nice aged white burg. Great mouth feel and finish. Cuts through the cheese and spreads it’s served with. Drink up soon so as not to miss what this has left in the tank. — 4 years ago

Bricco delle Viole Barolo Nebbiolo 2014

Delectable Wine
9.6

The 2014 Barolo Bricco delle Viole is positively stunning. There are many things about this wine that are super-impressive, but what stands out most is how soft and silky the tannins are. Because of that, the 2014 is much more approachable than it usually is, and yet also conveys the feeling of translucence that is such a signature of this site and wine. I am not sure I have ever tasted a young Bricco delle Viole with this much purity of fruit. The 2014 is total class. Don't miss it. (Antonio Galloni, Vinous, February 2018) — 7 years ago

Initial Brut Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Champagne Chardonnay 2011

OK. I have a six pack of this which has the disgorgement date of my only child’s birthdate. So, so cool right? I’d planned to keep these for a while, but after tasting someone else’s bottle a few months ago which was brought through the US importer, Rare Wine Co, which showed very, surprisingly advanced, I thought to begin my kid’s birthDAY 6-pack early, so we didn’t miss the magic of this wine just in case. Wow, best Initial I’ve ever had and not at all advanced. Fresh, very long and textbook initial in every way. Glad to have checked in since this will@last many years and ill slow down on popping their corks. Will be a great wine for my son for many, 5 to be exact, birthdays to come. — 8 years ago

Caymus Vineyards

Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2007

I think if you read this nonsense I post, you know how I feel about this producer, past & present. This 07 is outstanding & top of its bell curve. It is so good to revisit these great vintages of Caymus Classic.

This is fresher than the 97. It is rich/lush, cassis to currents, ripe, blackberries, black raspberries, black plum, raspberries & strawberries. Dark chocolate, mocha, classic, beautiful, Caymus Classic spice that I miss dearly in their new wines, black licorice, fudge, clove, cinnamon, nutmeg & vanillin, most top soil, limestone, dry herbs, dry tobacco, barrel shavings, taut leather, volcanic grey clay, dark, fresh & slightly withering flowers, violets, beautiful round acidity, balance, structure, nice tension and elegant finish that last minutes and falls on spice and evoluted earth tones.

This bottle is in fine shape. Still strong and will last another 10 years of fine drinking. Phenomenal vintage and time to enjoy.

Monthélie-Douhairet Porcheret

Cuvée Miss Armande Monthelie Pinot Noir 2018

Popped and poured; consumed over 3+ hours. The 2018 Monthelie, “Cuvée Miss Armande” by Domaine Douhairet-Porcheret comes from small parcels throughout Monthelie totaling a little over 2 acres. The wine pours a bright ruby color with a transparent core. No signs of sediment. The wine is medium viscosity, with no staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is redolent of red fruit: lightly macerated strawberries and cherries, horse blanket, red flowers with some forest floor. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium tannin and medium acid. The notes on the nose are confirmed. This is a somewhat rustic Burgundy but hugely charming right from the go. Drinking well now and should continue to do so through 2030. — 3 years ago

It’s been a few weeks and I sure did miss starting the night with my baby 375ml. Ahhhh! Several notes previously and all would still apply!

Cheers and best wishes to the people affected by the CA fires. As well, to all the fire fighters.

The smoke is in the town I live in and that’s pretty far from where they started. I hate to think what it’s like there!!!

So whats an appropriate price for this?
Somm David T

@Paul Treadway Huntington Beacher Bum Standard retail price is $74.99 for a 750ml. I stock up at the Whole Foods wine sale for $59.98. However, WF’s decided not to do their normal wine sale this November. I guess Jeff Bezos was a little short of $ this fourth quarter. In the past, they have done it 3-4 times a year. We’ll see what Jeff does now that he owns WF’s.
