Les Promenards Vouvray Chenin Blanc 2018

Blind tasting - third round. Rich golden color with yellow fringes. Has a ripe yellow pear and bruised yellow peach component. We all picked up on starfruit too and some bruised pineapple? Seems odd for the style. Waxy and honeysuckle notes with doughy bread round it out along with chalky minerality. Rather dry with a high amount of acidity. Half the group went Chablis but I’m proud to say I went Chenin. — a year ago

Vin de Savoie Détours Blanc Jacquère Chasselas 2019

Completely void of fruit - this is gunpowder, fresh matches, dusty chalk.

Very lean, almost watery - screeching acid and lemon bitters.

Sounds cerebral but not necessarily pleasurable. But as Seinfeld said, “Not that there’s anything wrong with that.”

Avant La Tempête Blanc Sec Jacquère 2018

Before the storm! Apremont Jacquere planted in 1956, destroyed in 2019 by hail. Orchard fresh fruit salad. Stony pallet and pineapple acidity. There is a creamy character, nice little background to the fruit and mineral. Does need some air to disparate some ‘natural odors’ but I find those easy to get past. — 2 years ago

Marcel Lapierre

Cuvée Marcel Lapierre Morgon Gamay 2015

Popped and poured from a 1.5L; enjoyed over the course of a few hours. This was singing from the first glass to the last. The 2015 “Cuvée Marcel Lapierre” pours a deep, hazy ruby/purple with a near opaque core. Medium viscosity with moderate staining of the tears. On the nose, the aromatics are off the hook. Still developing with beautiful red and dark fruits: pomegranate, cherry, strawberry, blackberries, herbs, mixed flowers and just a whiff of pastureland. Just lovely stuff. I could just smell my glass all evening and it might just be enough. Alas, I did drink. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium(+?) tannins and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish was long and satisfying. Mathieu and Camille did an excellent job managing the solar nature of the vintage with this bottle. The vineyard source probably didn’t hurt: Cuvée Marcel Lapierre is a blend of fruit from ancient vines in Côte du Py and “Le Douby”. This paired really well with traditional holiday ham balls. Already drinking well now but sure to age effortlessly over the next 10-15 years. — 4 months ago
