Sweet blackberries, kirsch, earth, chocolate shavings, brown spices and lots of fresh herbs. Clearly build with the great Northern Rhones in mind, this has quite an elegant posture, lovely acidity, integrating tannines, some transparency and a wonderful balance between richesse and coolness.

After three unsuccessful Piemontese pulls to go with my Piemontese dish, I finally decided that the wine pairing gods were sending me a signal, so like Justice William O. Douglas, I went west, [not so] young man. And this Grenache-based blend was very nice. Nose had warm, mossy stones, warm kirsch, roasted herbs and campfire. Mouthfilling fruit on entry, but very quickly turns savory and minerally. A bit more tannic than previous vintages I’ve had of this wine. — 4 years ago
Quite deep ruby , pink ruby rim . Quite tight and mineral , meaty note on the nose . Slightly green perhaps but with mineral , darker fruit , blackcurrant , kirsch , dark cherry. A little closed and solemn . A little woody on the palate first, with iris and dark cherry, cassis and blackberry notes . Quite firm tannins , bright acidity , medium length . This probably needs more time but is quite a difficult wine at present , serious and aloof , quite Bonnes Mares I suppose . Can be drunk now but would benefit from another 3-4 years and will last well a further 5-10. — 5 months ago
The second time I get to try this lovely bottle. This was their last bottle and it was listed for a ridiculously low price of roughly €120. Same bottle, same vintage is apparently 1200USD at the French Laundry. It feels like it’s in the end of its peak. Opens strong, medium to full bodied with well integrated tannins. Deep level of complexity. Dark fruits, kirsch, salted licourice, coffee beans, dried herbs, pencil shavings, earth. The level of acidity and minerality set it apart from its Napa peers. — 2 years ago
Yeah yeah, I know this is not considered a great vintage, but this is a Cracking Claret! Leaner in style and not a verbose powerhouse, it still delivers an elegant rendition of traditional Pauillac flavors. The cherry was more like kirsch liqueur, the cassis, graphite, leather, gravel, tobacco, the bay leaf... all beautifully delineated and intense. The mid palate was polished to perfection. Tannins are sturdy enough but seamless & integrated. The finish persists and invites another drink. Got these on a great deal from K&L back in the day and glad I did! In a great drinking window right now. — 4 years ago
An excellent Napa floor Cab with tastes of blueberry, blackberry, kirsch and vanilla. Full bodied, well balanced. New World for sure. Will be good for many more years — 6 months ago
I compare the Heitz Napa to the Joseph Phelps Napa in many ways. I believe the Phelps is slightly less vintage dependent than Heitz. But, this 07 like the vintage in Napa, sensational.
This 2007 is peaking. Perfectly ripe & juicy; brambly blackberries, creamy black raspberries, black plum, dark cherries/kirsch, blueberries come on late and poached strawberries on the edges. The tannins are still dark and tarry. Rich, sweet, dark soils, mid & dark berry cola, anise, steeped black tea, dry tobacco, used leather, cedar/sandalwood, clove, nutmeg, some cinnamon & vanillin, moist, grey volcanic clay, dry crushed rocks, limestone, mid spice, hints of grilled meat, some fresh/dry herds, a tad of eucalyptus, stewy/tumble weed, fresh & withering dark, red, blue florals framed in violets, excellent round acidity, the scope of the finishes encompasses; balance for days, nice structure & tensioned, elegant, polished and lasts two minutes.
Photos all taken around their tasting room on Hwy 29 when their tasting was still the last free tasting in Napa. Still not over the family selling to a corporation that has no wine experience. — 9 months ago
Nose of black tea, portobello, baked plum and soft, unctuous cherry. Kirsch-chocolate, blood orange, French roast, marigold, ferromagnesian elements. Coffee, baking chocolate, black cherry skin, cigar smoke, venison jerky, char, cassis, and vine charcoal.

Developing depth, warmth and class through the years. Medium-bodied, pure and fresh red fruit, spice and herbs, pinch of kirsch. Very good..!
