Alte Reben Spätburgunder 2018

Lyle Fass
9.3

My first Von Der Mark wine. And wow. He is a Pinot specialist from Baden. Vines near Freiburg like Möbitz. A Dutch fellow who is also a MW. I zoomed with him for an hour before he sent me samples. The right people liked his wines and that was enough for me to get samples.

Ridiculously high toned nose. Just incredible. Huge Pinot aromas that are classic and delightful at the same time. It smells like Chambolle like it’s crazy. Or a killer Vosne Romanee Village wine. It’s one of the Jost lifted aromatic wines I’ve had. Usually wines have an aromatic ceiling. This has none. Straight to your brain. There’s a citrus undertone. Ethereal floral complexity. Elite. It’s broad but filled out and clear. There is also a lovely earthy funk. Wow. Vosne Romanee violets. This is crazy aromatic. Like elite. Palate is so good. This is so elegant, has such terrific mouthfeel. Terrific compact fruit intermingled with crazy spice. Juicy and so clean. Sour, mid season cherries form a sweet/tart interplay that is terrific. Awesome ripeness and just insanely fresh, deep, pure and fleshy cherry fruit. This has guts as well. Sweet, ripe tannins and minerals abound in the finish, which is crazy long. This is as easy to ponder as it is to drink.

Bacharacher feinherb Spätlese Riesling 2015

Lots of pure, ripe, lightly-honeyed fruit in the nose, mostly peach and ripe apple. A subtle slatey/gravelly note. Round and intense on the attack, slightly sweet, with a long, finish that echos minerality. Very nice, but soft, acids. — 7 years ago

Ratzenberger

St. Jost Großes Gewächs Riesling 2013

Rich gold in colour and nicely matured. Sweet apple pie, quince, lemon tart with honey. On the palate beautifully balanced with sweet fruit and razor sharp lime acidity, with a mineral streak. Quite powerful & drinking very nicely now. — 8 years ago

Marble Mountain Red Blend

What a delightful light red. If you close your eyes, you’re drinking a white. Soft fruit, light acidity and a sweetness that’s fresh. I had it at room temp this time but I could see putting it on ice in the summer months. — 6 years ago

Bacharacher Kabinett Trocken Riesling

Refreshing acid balances off dry wine (not sure if this is exactly the one I am drinking as j haven’t seen the bottle). This kabinett is not totally dry. Great slate, waterfall aroma and lovely honeyed apricot. — 3 years ago

Le Grand Basel-Stadt Pinot Noir 2016

Just opened this. One can tell this will be a journey. I would only open this if you have at least 2-3 hours to Taste it. It’s all over the place on open. Basically tastes like if Ziereisen made wine in the mountains.

Nose is dense but has that alpine thing you get from like savoie. Very pretty. Almost intoxicating. Like a field of flowering cherry trees on top of a mountain.

Palate is very bright. Sweet cherry fruit.

A 9.5 easy on open. I’m guessing this will be better as it airs and integrates.

As this opens holy fuck. Nose is alpine with some gevrey spice. Palate is rubber made from grape vines (I know impossible), cherry. Rich. Elegant Cherry extract. Just a kiss of bitterness. Wowowowowo. So elegantly rich. Unbelievable.

Steeger St. Jost Riesling Feinherb 2011

Typical Ratzenberger brilliance. Macadamia, cocoa butter, Queen Anne cherries. Just the slightest hint of slate, flint and sweetness. Mouthcoating, impossibly long, already becoming a haunting sort of thing. Who else can take a hot year and a GG vineyard and make an exceptional feinherb of it? #ratzenberger #mittelrhein #riesling — 8 years ago
