Hot Seat

Chappellet

Signature Donn Chappellet Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2013

2013 vintage. Decanted with a little sed. Great cork. Tremendous power and on the leaner side of the ledger...think bigg vintage Leoville Las Cases or 80's/early 90's Montelena or *gasp* La Jota before the Helen Turley fruit bomb intervention in the early 90’s. Drinking a little "hot" but only at 14.9% ABV. Definite palate-wrecker with tannins for daze. Will take this wine in their lineup nearly every time vs the pricier Pritchard Hill shizz. The off the charts QPR is easily tasted vs the rest of their Cab/Cab-based lineup. Awesome now but will consolidate even further into a wolverine wine. Be very afraid. If you're looking for a quiet, placid dinner for two, then a rom-com snugglefest, this is not your beautiful house. This is someone else's beautiful wife. 12.01.24. — 25 days ago

Château Miraval

Côtes de Provence Rosé Blend

Just what you want with a Rose on a nice hot day. Light, clean, crisp with balanced acidity. Highly drinkable. — 6 months ago

Colgin Cellars

IX Estate Napa Valley Red Blend

Perfumed and lean on the nose with a bit of bacon fat, sour cherry, violet and plum. On the palate a little hot and truncated. The nose wins here, but the front is good. — 10 months ago

14 Hands Winery

Hot to Trot Columbia Valley Smooth Red Blend 2020

Cherry, berry, plum with a little oak and light tannins. Good stuff from WA state. It’s been a while since I’ve had this one and it’s good to be reunited. — 5 months ago

Turley

Juvenile California Zinfandel 2020

Revisiting the ‘20 Juvie with two more years in the cellar in it. Pleased to say it has mellowed quite a bit — medium purple with a nose that’s bright, sweet and full of dark fruit. The palate is long and warm (no longer ‘running hot on 15% abc’ as note on release) with kirsch, plum and subtle tannins. Excellent value. — 10 months ago

Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe

La Crau Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red Rhone Blend 2003

2003. Last bottle was 3 years ago, and this one I liked better. Starts out austere with evidence of a difficult hot year. But after hours in the decanter it cycled thru some almost port like caramelized tapenades and ended the evening with a somewhat strange but delicious red crème brûlée thing. So if you have one… I suggest patience thru the awkward opening hours to get to the awkward good part. Cheers. — 3 years ago

Crozes-Hermitage Syrah 2020

Very dark blackish rubi robe, nose of cassis, asian spices, blackcurrant and cedar, with a hint of flowers. Too hot a vintage and not to our taste, but the wine is light on its feet, fresh and quite elegant for the concentration. This is top notch and highly recommended. — 3 months ago

Lovely and ripe on the nose with really punchy plum and pepper. On the palate a bit hot and short compared to the others alongside — 10 months ago
