Wwe. Dr. H. Thanisch (Erben-Thanisch)

Bernkasteler Badstube Kabinett Feinherb Riesling 2023

Wow what’s not to love there! Lemon curd and lemon peel, chalk, white flowers, a bit of petroly thing too. The palate is a great acid backbone and everything else is a complement to it. There are some lemon juice, lemon peel notes dancing around Yes, there is some width, almost a viscosity quality to it on the fringes, some grip in the rear, before a great long lemon curd, honey, lemon peel finish that is lasting for ever. There is clearly SR in there, but it's so well integrated and balanced that it's super fresh and fun. You gotta love it! For 14 Eur in the Hamburg airport it's a steal. — 6 days ago

Berncasteler Doctor Kabinett Riesling 2019

From the small Grosse Lage vineyard of Berncasteler Doctor, this Kabinnet tips the sweetness scale at medium dry for my taste, yet still manages to be delicate. Enticing nose of orchard and tropical fruits, honeysuckles, with touches of flinty mineral note. Very long finish. I think it needs at least another 4-5 years to show properly.
Interesting notes about the winery: it’s named after the widow of Dr. Thanisch (Wwe.). The original winery was divided into 2 equal properties in the 1990s: Wwe. H.Thanisch – Erben Thanisch and Wwe. H.Thanisch – Erben Müller-Burggraef.

Great bottling in almost any vintage. Their Weingut is right on the river surrounded by terraced vineyards. Tasted in the afternoon w/ Sofia Thanisch in 2015 after the Auction at their Weingut. Amazing settling. Cheers Ming. 🥂

Hill of Grace Vineyard Shiraz 1996

Only pale to mid crimson in colour with a tawny edge at 26 years of age. Black and blue fruits with game and a coffee bean note. The medium bodied yet rich palate is savoury and earthy with blackberry and just so so silky with resolved tannins and low acid. Not sure that I agree totally with Bob Campbell MW’s description - “like getting into an old Jag on a hot day”, but I love the imagery and can see where he’s coming from. Jancis said “pure hedonism “ and gave it 19/20. The latest iteration of H of G (2017) is selling for around $950 a bottle in Brisbane. No doubt brilliant but too expensive for me. I remember paying $12.50 for the 1982 vintage on release. There is a certain H of G character that is recognisable over many vintages over the years. Must be one of the most unique Shiraz vineyards in the world with vines up to a 150 years old. A privilege to drink this wine and close to perfection with 98 points. — 3 years ago

Millésime Brut Grand Cru Champagne Blend

The nose is pretty and pure, with fresh grapefruit, delicate red berries, and white flowers. The palate is approachable though it has nice tension to it, with orange pith, tangerine, bread dough, and a touch of saline. — 4 months ago
