Occidental Ridge Vineyard Pinot Noir 2016

Shay A

My 2016 Rivers Marie Pinots are about gone…SummaOV is left. Occidental, Silver Eagle and SummaOV are always my favorites. I’m between a 93-94 here.

Great example of a Pinot that has a lot of power but plenty of balance. Deep black cherry colored in the glass but the aromatics are much more savory than expected. There’s an animalistic/feral quality to this initially (that I love) showing a smoked meat flair alongside dark blood orange and ripe black cherries. Commanding mouthfeel and great acidity. Continual back and forth of dark berry fruit and savory/herbal notes. The use of whole cluster is noticeable but it does a good job complimenting the wine (more high toned) and not taking center stage (as in, not overly stemmy/green). Wonderful lengthy finish. More brooding and savory than Silver Eagle but certainly not in the vein of a “cab lovers pinot” style. This was delicious and likely hangs in this window for at least 5+yrs.

Cuvée Marie Ragonneau Marsannay Pinot Noir 2018

Medium dark rubi robe, nose of flowers and spices with a hint of wild cherries. Medium bodied with supple tannins but strong spine buried under this great acidity and balance. Feels like modern winemaking but has no excess and is impeccable wine that drinks great now but should benefit of 3 to 5 years in the cellar. Will gain complexity. We loved it. — a month ago

Bearwallow Vineyard Pinot Noir 2016

Fun to experience TRB’s winemaking with Anderson Valley fruit. Nose is lighter and more lifted than his Sonoma bottlings, yet still has the density and depth of fruit expected of his style. There’s a background radiation of higher acid from times past. At this age it’s all in balance with the savory and bright elements perfectly balancing Thomas’s extraction level. This might be peak. Drink up! — 12 days ago

Ramey Mountain Vineyard Estate Bottled Cabernet Sauvignon 2013

Like reading a novel. Big wine but medium weight… if that makes sense. Big fruit… but not a fruit bomb. Tons of sediment… but the color is clear and bright. This was a fun wine tasted over 3 days. From the town of Oregon House, California. In the Sierra Foothills. Near Clos Saron. … magic soil in Oregon House!? — 23 days ago

Les Champs-Grillés Saint Amour Gamay 2018

Nose is lively, with equal parts fruit and cracked stone. The fruits are bright and ripe and tangy. Also a bit of spice. In the mouth, the zingy and assertive fruit is still there, but it’s in a surprisingly structured package. Bone dry, good acids, even some chalky tannins in the back half of the palate. Atypically for a Saint Amour, it seems like it could improve for another couple of years.

Willow Creek Vineyard Pinot Noir

Recently picked up at Renegade Wine in Santa Barbara. A touch cloudy with a dark garnet red. A bit of stewed fruit on the nose, followed up by earthiness and a hint of baking spices. Medium body with medium minus tannins (4/10). Similar notes on the palate and smooth rounded finish. Drink now. — 12 days ago

Cambon Nouveau Gamay 2021

Early gamay, Lapierre style. The dress is superb on translucent raspberry notes. Fresh nose and mouth, fruity at 110% with this very specific aerial concentration of carbonic maceration that brings a floral exuberance to the nose without tannins. Blindly, we would be very annoyed to say with certainty that it is a red wine, as the cursor is placed on other landmarks than tannins. This does not prevent a certain matter that gives chewing. Serve refreshed and airy. Very nice treat. Note revised upwards: open on Mondays, tasted on Fridays, the wine has held up admirably, keeping its greed and gaining in breadth. A sign that says a lot about the authenticity of production.

Gamay primeur esprit Lapierre.
