Baden Spätburgunder Rosé 2021

2021. Courtesy of @Pinotman /// Andreas. Disturbed, lake bottom brown color. Slightly muddy and tart nose. Medium body. Not my cup of tea but there is an immaculate, front palate flavor moment of perfectly aged red Burg/Pinot Noir of, say, 15-18 years. Everything else is held in check during that time. That safe harbor in the storm is my take away. 4.1.26. — 13 days ago

I do not agree Burgundy priced itself essentially out of the market for normal and especially for young people. CA Pinot’s have done the same and are often beyond > 14%. That really just leaves Oregon and German or for that matter Swiss Pinots in a not totally over the top price range. Over there they are essentially 1/2 the price. Here they are heavily tariffed.

This particular wine was a Rose was 20$. I have not seen in the last 15 years an American Rose which can match Enderle & Moll. In fact i rarely see any Rose Pinot made - stateside - why? Because it simply does not make business sense if you can charge 50$ for the reds coming from the same grapes.

I did not mention rose’ exclusively. I did say Pinot’s. I also mentioned more than one area besides the states that are better suited for Pinot Noir. I believe I mentioned at least three areas w/ an etc. on that subject. As to your point on value, if you google Pinot Noir roses, you will find plenty of them under or close enough to $20 stateside. My only other point, was on sweetness. This one is sweeter than I prefer as would many of the others you may find at a $20 price point. I prefer one’s that are dry. Often, from Spain out of Tempranillo. But I am not here to debate or argue wine opinions. I was only leaving an agreeing comment on Scott’s post. Whether his reasons and mine are similar for not necessarily gravitating to this one, it is just a comment. I’d like to think that is still ok here. Cheers!

Ménage à Trois Pinot Noir 2015

Upon opening unreadable, tart and harsh. Needs about 2-3 hours to open up. Super earthy. Tons of sediment. Very herbaceous. Black forest thyme. Black cherry. Elderberry galore. A tour de force really. Still a ton of tannins - to much? Give it 5 more years? A wine on the edge - tip of the spear. As some of these high end E & M‘s are. I like their wines but not fully convinced of the 2015‘s. Same as with the 2015 Burghs. The hype might not pan out. 24 hours later - this wine needs potentially 10 more years of age - hard to say - mellowed out - orange zest, port wine characteristics, cranberry - still a little rough but for the E&M fans a treat. — 3 months ago

Outrageously great. Juicy and sweet fruit. Tangy and ripe. Nose is spice, violets, cinnamon, black cherry, pine spice, resin, so so aromatic. Palate is juicy, dense, linear and focused. Awesome sweet tannins. Inner mouth aromas of red cherry. So vivid. Purple fruit explosion on the finish. Unreal freshness. Freakishly great.

Absolutely dead on day 2. Day 1. 9.8. Day 2. 6.5.

Buntsandstein Pinot Noir 2009

2009 vintage. Brought by and cracked with @Pinotman /// Andreas. Slightly plush with restrained berry tones. Harmonious and comfortable. Chilled down a spell and and flecks of earthiness appeared on the borders of the palate. Tasted immediately after opening, 15 mins, 45 minutes and 3 hours later. Picked up a 3-5 year old Côte-Rôtie flavor profile on the last sampling. Smoked meats, dirt, iron, slight plum reduction. This was phenomenal. Thank you, @Pinotman /// Andreas! — a month ago

Muschelkalk Pinot Noir 2009

Well I kind of trashed this wine with a 9.1 - 9.2 upon opening. As mentioned corks are shot drink up. But as this stayed under my Argon line for a good week it came around. Cannot beat the Buntsandstein. But still really a hell of a wine and a showcase for German Pinot. Cherry 🍒 nose, crushed stone. Touch cedar. Herbs. This is like Burghs used to be decades ago / the wine maker took a hell of a risk. — a month ago

Buntsandstein Müller-Thurgau 2022

Actually the Buntandstein. On day 2 really quite nice, a bit of the more cidery quality recedes. Dangerously drinkable. Great acid and mouthfeel. — 3 months ago

Buntsandstein Ida Pinot Noir 2016

An extraordinary wine of beauty and at the same time wild - a wild beast really. Mostly raspberry notes, crushed marble, tart, cherry. And spice, touch cardamom. Herbs oregano and some thyme. Orange peel. Definitely whole clusters in this one. Needs 1 hour of air. But i would say drink now. A real treat for the E&M freaks. 2016 was across a terrific vintage for them. — 3 months ago

I agree but this vintage seems to be OK to drink now. I am one of the few who has their vintages back to 2009. Not sure if the winery will survive. Lately the news has not been so good. A very sad affair.

So i am missing just 2008. I plan to go back and say hi to Florian Moll in June. Sven left the enterprise and started his own gig.

Sad indeed. I bought the first vintage of Sven’s Pinot. Maybe the first two? But have not opened one yet.
