Black Cloud Barrel Reserve California Red Blend 2023

Deep Ruby color. Dark fruit, tart with smooth, rich tannins. Bright fruit flavors, without a sugary taste. — 18 days ago

Matthiasson

Matthiasson Vineyard Ribolla Gialla 2017

Paul J
9.2

Warm weather is here, so time to break out the Ribolla Gialla!

Orangish gold color. Honeysuckle, lavender, and perfume/floral tones. Wasn’t what I was expecting from having many past vintages. Wine is more refined and less acidic than I’m used to. That’s not bad, wine just seems mellower than normal but more complex.

Pomerol Red Bordeaux Blend 2007

Anniversary wine. Nice to have a break from the Paso wines we’ve been trying all day and have a nice French blend — 3 years ago

Cline Cellars

Big Break Vineyard Zinfandel 2016

Poured into a decanter roughly an hour prior to service and presented double-blind. The 2016 “Big Break” presents a bright ruby with a deep but transparent core; medium+ viscosity with moderate staining of the tears and no obvious signs of sediment. On the nose, the wine is developing with notes of tart, ripe and dried red fruits: cherries, Craisins, red flowers, leather, dried earth and light baking spice. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose, though the fruit comes across a lot more ripe. The finish is medium+ and the alcohol is high. I called 2020 Cote du Rhône (Southern), Grenache heavy GSM blend. What a pleasant surprise! I used to drink the smack out of various Cline Zinfandel’s and Big Break was always amongst their better, if not a little more difficult to find. Drinking well now and will continue to do so through 2031, easy. — 17 days ago

Penfolds

St. Henri Shiraz 2005

A Collection of great Australian Reds - Christmas break up of the Tennis Group. This was the wine I brought. I forgot to say all these wines were tasted blind. Only the owner of the wine knew the identity. This was a standout thanks to the vintage with a long life ahead of it. HH has a drinking window through to 2040. As well as the savoury liquorice accents like the 2007, this had plenty of red and black fruits. That was my 3rd of 6 - 3 to go. Next in a couple of years if I have the willpower. — 2 years ago

2008 was a warm year in South Australia and I see varying drinking windows. The Rewards of Patience says 2021 to 2045. Harvey Steiman said 2015 to 2025. Looks like a drink or Hold.

Similar to previous notes, but seems to be in a weird spot right now. Tried to break out was very restrained. — 3 years ago

Fontanafredda

Serralunga d'Alba Barolo Nebbiolo 2015

A very nice Barolo that didn’t break the bank. Paired well with grilled meats and fire-roasted vegetables while dining out. Bing cherry notes with a slight minerality on the mid-palate. — 3 years ago
