Clos De May

Rudolf May

Recis Spätburgunder 2011

Like a Burgh - no difference. Franken Pinot (FP). Schlepped this all the way from this super remote winery my 2nd bottle. Stumbled onto this wine because Jancis Robinson recommended this (after all she used to be the Sommelier of the Queen of England). Suitcase import. 13.5% world class - really. Roses on the nose. In the glass faint cherries, blackberries, elderberry (just bought a plant we used to make jam), red currants. Back palate hard to define Za'atar (the plant) - Screw Cap (a strange choice for such quality juice). I know this wine is inaccessible for most folks on this website - sorry. But Franken is a very interesting wine region. The soil is by the way limestone - so it is classic for Pinot. I walked the vineyards - very off the beaten path - even for Germany. — a month ago

Château Mouton Rothschild

Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend 2007

No formal notes . medium deep ruby , medium bright ruby rim. Quite spicy a little oak noticeable at first . Mixed dark fruits . A bit more round and juicy on the palate , good acidity , slightly grippy but polished tannins . This becomes a bit more restrained and reserved after a while. Served blind , I actually put this as Haut Brion , due to its generous personality, and polished tannins. Overall showed well in the flight was my top wine (though the Cheval Blanc may well be better in absolute terms) . Can be enjoyed now , though has the substance to last a further decade or so, a good showing for the Mouton. — 10 months ago

Château Talbot

Saint-Julien Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2019

2019 vintage. Thought some of the previous 2014-2018 vintages were ready steady go! from the onset but this may take the cake. Light-medium body. Nose is über-giving with herbs and baking spices. Finish of 40+ seconds highlighting a cocoa/baking chocolate baseline supplemented with ripe dark cherry and plum. Tannins fully in check-for now. — 3 years ago

Château Latour

Premier Grand Cru Classé Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend 2005

A knockout left bank Bordeaux. I’ve read that the 2005s may go longer than the potentially even more vaunted 2000s and I might agree based on this bottle. Decanted 5 hours. Cork in perfect shape. Amazing depth of fruit and a ton of Bordeaux earth. Nose goes on and on as does the finish. Was an excellent pairing but a very good but simple roast chicken. — 15 days ago

Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon 2017

New vintage for me. This estate Cab always delivers, even on what some may call off vintages. — 9 months ago

Chappellet

Signature Donn Chappellet Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2022

2022 vintage. May eventually clamber up to a 9.3 rating but currently coming across as slightly lacking in terms of punch and verve as compared to the last handful of vintages. Let’s give it 8-10 years. 06.18.25. — 5 months ago

Château Certan De May De Certan

Pomerol Red Bordeaux Blend 1975

Still pretty alive, albeit more into tertiary notes with some fruit still evident, at 47 years old. — 6 months ago

Château Cheval Blanc

St. Émilion Red Bordeaux Blend 1983

Lovely fruit. A tiny hint of band that may be holding this back a touch. A foot of animal and deep gravely fruit. Slick and intense. Very good. — 3 years ago
