2022/7/12-14. Compared to the Joseph Colin Compendium, this was a bit fatter, richer and showed more oak influence (though certainly not excessive in that regard). There’s more smoky mineral in the nose - perhaps a bit of reduction as well - and a bit more juice and depth to the fruit. A few years to integrate more could make it even better. — 4 years ago

Slight reduction. Lemon curd, Granny Smith apple, grilled pineapple and ripe mango flavors. Subdued mineral presence, hints of toast and caramel. Not the raciest representation of Saint Aubin, but certainly a killer value. Lovely, balanced and bright- and only gets better after a day or even two. — 8 years ago

1996 Domaine Armand Rousseau Clos de la Roche Grand Cru

Clos de la Roche, situated in Morey-Saint-Denis, is the most renowned and the largest Grand Cru vineyard of the village. Its terroir is consequently exceptional, yielding wines with striking acidity, remarkable concentration, and a structure that is powerful yet displays extraordinarily refined tannins. It is often considered one of Burgundy's most compelling wines, masterfully combining power with elegance.

The style neither mirrors the robust, muscular, and overtly powerful character typical of its northern neighbour, Gevrey-Chambertin, nor does it precisely replicate the extreme perfume, elegance, and delicacy that define its southern neighbour, Chambolle-Musigny. Instead, Clos de la Roche is the quintessential synthesis of strength and finesse—boasting a solid backbone alongside intricate depth of aroma and texture. Thanks to its pronounced acidity, one should not open a bottle without allowing for at least 15 years of ageing.

Upon opening, after 30 minutes the nose offered aromas of ripe black cherry, wild strawberry, sour plum, rose, and violet. After an hour, further notes of truffle, forest floor, leather, and spice developed. However, the minerality I expected remained elusive.

The bottle's condition was unfortunately not optimal. It lacked the sustained aromatic evolution and explosive bouquet I had anticipated. This fatigue and muted character were likely a result of its shipment from the United States. — 10 months ago

Alec Seysses is a big believer in his ‘06, says it’s better than the ‘05. Still, a group at our table found the intensity of the ‘10 made it the Clos de la Roche to put away. The ‘09 was related by Seysses as their first vintage with over-ripening concerns, however deftly handled. The ‘14 had large support as delicious and most enjoyable at present. Ripe, dense, and quite open was the ‘19 with a huge future. The ‘17 Clos de la Roche was also served. Sneaking into the picture, and maybe my favorite of the night, was the ‘17 Clos Saint-Denis (see score). — 4 years ago
