Jérôme Lefevre, Elaine Delalot’s son, falls into the category of noninterventionist; at least by Champagne’s standards. No pesticides. No weeding. No tilling. The dude doesn’t even prune. “Impressions” comes from a single small vineyard in Charly-sur-Marne called “Les Boulards”, planted exclusively to Meunier. The soils in Les Boulards are largely sand! The wine is aged in new, medium+ toasted, 300L barrels. The results are stunning.

Popped and poured; enjoyed over the course of an hour. “Impressions” pours a slightly bronzed color with a persistent mousse. On the nose, the wine is developing with notes of bright tropical fruits, raspberries, citrus, some varnish, and minerals. Natural. Soulful. Stunning. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long and the texture is creamy. A totally “wow” wine and one of the more singular Champagnes I’ve had since my visit with Clément Perseval last fall. Disgorged November 2023. A Régnié which expresses itself on the side of black cherries, kirsch, or Plum Eau de vie. The nose is very expressive and counterbalances a very dry character in the mouth, almost salty. Aerial, accurate. To drink.
Note revised upwards, at D+1 because it held up admirably and even opened up to additional nuances. A sincere wine. Really well done.

Un Régnié qui s’exprime du côté des cerises noires, kirsch, ou encore Eau de vie de prune. Le nez est très expressif et contrebalance un caractère très sec en bouche, quasi salin. Aérien, précis. À boire.
Note revue à la hausse, à J+1 car il a admirablement tenu et s’est même ouvert sur des nuances supplémentaires. Un vin sincère. Vraiment bien fait. — 4 years ago

Seductive honeyed apple on the nose with a backbone of flowers and flint give way to a zippy and savory mouthfeel, with fantastic minerality and length. Absolutely brilliant - the structure and mouthfeel of a Chablis with the nose of a white burgundy from further south. — 7 years ago

While we ‘were’ in Burgundy, we hopped on over to Champagne and experienced Christophe Baron’s Champagne. Made from Pinot Meunier. A blanc de noir Champaign. Everything was in sync from the fine persistent bubbles lifting flavors of crisp stone fruit to the finishing notes of lightly toasted bread. Loved it!! And, amazingly, this magnum bottle kept its tension and sass for four days since first opened!! — 7 months ago

Pop and pour. Still way too young, but a solid Corton-Charly. On the nose: soft mango, lime, oak toast, struck match, charcoal and black pepper. On the palate: good acidity, slightly thin, but lemon oil, green apple, black pepper. Only complaint is that this is slightly hollow on the mid-palate at this stage. Double decanted. Notes from 3 hrs open. I am in love with this wine. Stylistically, this is the opposite end of the spectrum from, say, a Louis Latour or Leflaive Corton Charly: this is so vibrant, and lemon drenched mineral, Corton Charlemagne. The nose shows green apple, and lemon curd soaked crushed rock with a very soft nutty note; so intense, I can smell this from a foot away from my glass. On the palate, fantastic dry extract, super-vibrant acid, followed by guava and then lemon and crushed rocks. Excellent weight and a long finish. An acid-head's Corton Charly? Anyway, this is definitely a baby: either needs a very long decant (3hrs at a minimum) or another 3-5 years in bottle. — 7 years ago

Yes, that Christophe Baron (Cayuse, Horsepower, etc). This project has him going back to his family’s roots and focusing on Meunier. “Les Alouettes” is a tiny vineyard in Charly-sur-Marne, bottled at zero dosage and only available in magnum.

Popped and poured; enjoyed over the course of two days. Even better on Day 2. The 2019 pours a straw color with a persistent mousse. On the nose, the wine is developing with notes of raspberries, Gala apple, almond, a touch of lightly toasted brioche and chalky minerals. On the palate, the wine is dry with high acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long. I found this a touch reticent on the pop and pour but this opened dramatically by Day 2. Relative youth and the format surely played a role. Yummy stuff. Drink now with patience through 2039. Disgorged May 2023. Only 1358 magnums made. — 3 months ago

This all estate grown gem from Baron Fuente is composed of 45% Chardonnay, 40% Meunier, and 15% Pinot Noir from around Charly-sur-Marne. This drinks great right now because of the long ageing that the team at Baron Fuente have lavished on it, but will also keep great in good storage over the medium term.
