Spier

21 Gables Pinotage 2020

Spier – 21 Gables Pinotage / 2020
Stellenbosch – South Africa 🇿🇦

Overview
A benchmark Pinotage from one of South Africa’s oldest wine estates, Spier (est. 1692). This single-varietal Pinotage highlights both Stellenbosch terroir and the estate’s commitment to sustainability and vegan-friendly practices.

Aromas & Flavors
A concentrated nose of ripe blackberry, plum, and mulberry intertwined with smoky mocha, sweet spice, and a touch of earthiness. On the palate, dark fruit depth melds seamlessly with cocoa and subtle oak.

Mouthfeel
Full-bodied yet polished, with smooth, integrated tannins and a long, velvety finish. Rich and powerful, but retaining freshness that keeps it balanced.

Food Pairings
Grilled lamb chops with rosemary, smoky barbecue ribs, roasted root vegetables, or aged Gouda. A natural partner for bold and savory dishes.

Verdict
An exceptional Pinotage that balances tradition with finesse. It showcases why Stellenbosch is considered the spiritual home of the grape, and why Spier remains a leader in South African fine wine.

Did You Know?
Pinotage is South Africa’s signature grape, created in 1925 by crossing Pinot Noir with Cinsault (then known locally as Hermitage). Spier’s “21 Gables” line honors the Cape Dutch heritage architecture of the estate.

🍷 Personal Pick Highlight
A jewel of Stellenbosch. This vintage shows remarkable balance and depth, one of those rare Pinotages that leaves a lasting impression and deserves a spot in any serious collection.

Great price at $16, smooth and mellow chenin to pair with anything. — 6 months ago

T'Voetpad White Blend

Just opened up another 2021 (have a few left in the collection after tasting this in SA). On the nose stone fruit, with a hint of flint. Taste: amazing texture and length, freshness, minerality and some wet wool, lanolin and hints of anise. I’d say perfect time to drink the 2021!

Pairing: Grilled octopus and saffron risotto

De Toren

Fusion V Stellenbosch Red Blend 2018

A blend of the five Bordeaux varietals, this is an exceptional wine. There’s a great balance of acidity, velvet tannins and black fruit. Cassis, black cherry, black plum, a light toast and vanilla oak component and developing tertiary character of leather, forest floor and cigar box. Terrifically harmonious the wine is full bodied with a sense of being heavy. A joy to consume. — 4 months ago

Kanonkop Estate

Simonsberg Stellenbosch Pinotage 2019

And now to South Africa! Where they produce some awesome en es for decent prices. The Pinotage was created there. A crossing between Pinot Noir and Cinsault (which was called Hermitage in its olden days). It tastes like a Pinot Noir on steroids. But, when Kanonkop gets its hands on it they lift it up to a sensational experience. Vibrant, intense and layered with flavors. Their black label is their cream of the crop sourced from old vines. — 4 months ago

Paul Sauer Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2016

Deep Ruby with slightly lighter ruby edge nose and palate of dark cherry flavours with some vanilla and tobacco flavours
Still maturing but will last a long time.
Great accompaniment to a NY cut steak. Should further mature for a decade or more.

Klein Constantia

Estate Red Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2013

We are staying in South Africa. Can you believe some of the oldest operating wineries are right there. Like Klein Constantia, founded in 1685. Yep, they made wine requested by Napoleon, praised by Dickens and Jane Austin so it says on the label. Unique, beautiful little spot right next to Cape Town where they grow the grapes and produce the wines. One of the outstanding wineries produces mesmerizing Bordeaux blends in ancient soils in the land called Paarl. Their roots go back to Napa and Opus One. Enjoy! Cederberg

Bukettraube 2023

I don’t know of any other producers who make a single-varietal wine from this obscure grape, but this wine is still fairly easy to find, an observation that is not difficult to understand. This wine is just plain delicious. Year after year it is in my top two or three white wines. Very aromatic, it boasts an abundance of fruity and floral aromas. On the palate, flavors of lychee and dried apricot reveal a subtle sweetness that is hard to resist. 100% Bukettraube. 4/13/25. — 7 months ago
