Giacomo Conterno

Riserva Monfortino Barolo Nebbiolo 2008

Second bottle from this vintage that I have enjoyed but this one I purchased from a local wine shop. Opened very nicely after 2.5 hours and enjoyed over 5 hours. Cherry notes were bursting through but mature and deep. Blended wonderfully with the earthiness. This wine is still a baby and think I will do my best to sit on my remaining 2008s for at least 5 more years. — 11 days ago

Santa Cruz Mountains Cabernet Sauvignon 2018

2018 vintage. Oak a little showier than last visit 4.20.24. *Full disclosure* Probably my favorite CA cabernet for QPR purposes-year in, year out-since the early 90's. Not inexpensive, yet, in a world of ridiculous CA cab pricing, this is a bargain. Had I storage space and projected lifespan, would pick up two cases and crack a bottle every year starting in 2028. Some overt baby fat/oak to dissipate in anticipation. Currently, wanting more structure and depth but, given the track record with this wine/producer, it's enroute. 5.29.24. — a month ago

Ridge Vineyards

Monte Bello Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2000

Opened the evening prior at 7pm and double-decanted; the bottle was left at room temp with the cork pressed lightly back into the neck until service. The 2000 pours a deep garnet color with a near opaque core and a slightly water rim; medium+ viscosity with moderate staining of the tears and some sediment. On the nose, the wine is vinous and showing some real power with a compelling combination of ripe and desiccated fruit: dark brambles, cassis, leather, dill, olives, spiced meat, tobacco and soft baking spices. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ tannins and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long and whoa is it ever delicious. This has to be one of the wines of the vintage. Drink now through 2040. — 2 days ago

Santa Cruz Mountains Chardonnay 2019

2019 vintage. As delicious as ever. Exquisite balance of fruit and acidity. Medium-heavy bod. Clean with a smattering of mineral influence here and there. So good. 6.5.24. — 21 days ago

Tenuta San Guido

Bolgheri Sassicaia Cabernet Sauvignon Cabernet Franc 2007

Finally had my a-ha moment with this wine (after opening a 16 too early). 07 was just beautiful - kept growing in stature over the 3 hour meal. Drank in Venice to celebrate our anniversary. — 16 days ago

Riserva Barolo Nebbiolo 1982

#AgedWineTuesday

Dark brick in color.

Pretty nose of stewed red fruits, light oak, spices, caramel, sweet chocolates notes, smoked meat and black pepper.

Light to medium in body with medium acidity.

Dry on the palate with raspberries, sweet cherries, cooked plums, earth, light forest floor, tobacco leaf, herbs and light black pepper.

Long finish with fine grained tannins and tangy strawberries.

This 42 year old Barolo is just gorgeous now. Drinking beautifully with great complexity and mouthfeel. Elegant and rich. Well balanced and powerful.

Feels like it still has power in it to last even longer, although I don't see it getting much better from this point on. Will continue to drink nicely in the next 5 to 10 years.

Easy drinking right out of the bottle, and good by itself as a sipping wine. Still showing great acidity and feels vibrant and very much alive. Delicious, powerful and delectable.

This is a wonderful experience. I just love tasting these kind of aged wines.

100% Nebbiolo grapes were aged for 12 months in cement vats and then for 5 years in Slavonian oak barrels.

14% alcohol by volume.

94 points.

$350.

Estate Monte Bello Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon Blend

Promising red fruit on the nose but a bit too tannic—decanting was de rigueur. After 45 minutes it was better but still tight. It took a full two hours to open up fully and show interesting notes of tobacco, earth and pencil shavings to balance the fruit and acid. Tells me that I should wait another five years before opening my remaining bottles. Enjoyed the 2021 vintage with prime ribeye cap steak from Costco, chicken liver pate and Taleggio cheese, with visiting family (William, Teresa, Xander and Samantha). — 16 days ago

Las Rocas Calatayud Garnacha 2017

This is a great wine. It opens with strong berry character and some oak/vanilla. As it opens the jammy character shines through and you get a strong berry sweetness in flavor and aroma that drinks really easy for 14.5%. Stands up to the bit of age I put on it. Will drink again! — 7 days ago
