Château Canon-la-Gaffelière

Saint-Émilion Red Bordeaux Blend 2012

It's time for some Merlot on this #MerlotThursday . Here's a nice one from Saint Emilion.

Dark ruby in color with a short brick/ reddish rim.

On the nose, blueberries, cherries, licorice, oak, vanilla, wildflowers, spices, peppercorn, pencil lead, dark earth and coffee. Not very powerful though.

Full bodied with medium acidity and nice legs.

Dry on the palate with cooked cherries, oak, licorice, spices, chocolates, tobacco, diet cola, coffee, earth, vegetables and wet leaves.

Medium minus on the finish with firm tannins and tangy cranberries.

This 8 year old is drinking nicely now, although not from a great vintage. Easy drinking with a nice mouthfeel and nice complexity. Showing some over ripen fruits, which might be a storage issue. A good food wine, though.

Needs a couple of hours to open up properly.

I had it blind, and called Right Bank Bordeaux 2011.

A blend of 50% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Franc and 10% Cabernet Franc. Aged in French oak barrels for 15 months.

13.5% alcohol by volume.

89 points.

$100.

Château Moulin Haut-Laroque

Fronsac Red Bordeaux Blend 2003

From a 375. I bought this one 15 years ago for $12 and I’ve been waiting to open it on a Tuesday night with some take out Chinese. I finally found the night! At first, it was very tight and backward. Huge tannins that I thought would never fade. I figured it was a 2003 that was off center And funky. After 30 minutes it was still tight but the black fruit rose out of the glass and the tannins faded revealing a beautiful claret that was a little hard around the edges but offered immense pleasure. Fun to find something that was laying around so long — 2 months ago

Fronsac Red Bordeaux Blend 2016

Vintage 2016 / Wine for the cellar, lots of potential. Nice red fruit, sultry touch. Good concentration. I like Fronsac because it can turn to a little wonder after cellaring. — a month ago
