Borne of Fire

The Burn Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2022

Clear, deep ruby in color; on the nose, it's clean with medium intensity primary and secondary aromas of blackberries, cassis, and graphite; on the palate, it's dry with high acidity, high tannins, high alcohol, full body, and pronounced primary and secondary flavors of black cherries, blueberries, black cardamom and bell pepper with a long finish. This wine is complex and intense. Overall, I rate this wine as very good. — 4 months ago

Les Picasses Chinon Cabernet Franc 2008

The yin to 2005’s yang, the 2008 is ethereal and elegant, very Burgundian like. The fruit is more red to dark red, slightly more high toned and fresher - red cherry, currants, and pomegranate, with elegant spice and savory notes. The pepper here is a little more perceptible but is also very well integrated with the style the vintage has borne. The palate has med/med+ concentration, with more perceptible acidity, but in a mouthwatering, refreshing way. The tannin are med/med+ and fine, and this finishes long, cool and fresh. Another example of a great vintage/terroir wine. — 3 years ago

Not a fan of cognacs and hard stuff but this is definitely one of the smoothest strong drinks I have ever tried — 5 years ago

Napoléon Premier Cru du Cognac Grande Champagne Blend

I don’t drink very much cognac and can’t remember when or where I picked up this bottle, but a small pour sounded good to end a cold and snowy day. Light in color. Body feels light at first, but gains viscosity. Spicy, oaky, and a little astringent on the finish. It reminded more of some really good scotch I’ve had than of some slightly sweeter cognacs. I liked it a lot. — 5 years ago

L'Arbaléte Grand Cru Dézaley 2018

Very rounded, with a complex mix of floral fruit and minerality. To my mind much better than their “La Borne” Grand Cru Dézaley which seemed a bit hollow in comparison. — 7 years ago

Brookman Syrah 2003

There be prunes about...and rich compote, smokey and spicy beautifully integrated fruit borne of high extraction. Feels just past its apogee but delicious. Rich. Elevated. Perfect match for 45 day aged top loin made perfectly rare. Drink up. — 8 years ago

Colares Chitas Reserva Velho Ramisco 2009

Ramisco varietal, borne in a sand terroir of Portugal region beginning to be overrun by hotels. It simply has become a favorite wine quickly; not cheap( about 40$ & up, usually they are 500ml bottles), gains in intensity with air. Fine grained tannins, wild red berries, lithe acidity. Low alcohol & has the rep for long range storage. God, I love this stuff. Very rare wine too, which of course adds to the allure. — 6 years ago

Rubesco Rosso di Torgiano Sangiovese Blend 2020

Delectable Wine
9.3

The 2020 Rubesco, 90% Sangiovese and 10% Colorino, is darkly floral with spiced black cherries, red plums, dusty rose and balsamic spice. Depths of ripe red and blue fruits swirl beneath an air of violet inner florals, taking on an iron-borne minerality toward the round, pliant close. $20.00 (Eric Guido, Vinous, October 2024) — 2 years ago

Series M Red Blend 2020

Smooth, rounded and perfectly balanced. But there is a powerful core that slowly reveals it selves as the layers open up. Spiced dark blue fruit with fine fully integrated tannins providing structure and a soft finish. You want to hear the story of how this wines was borne in a far away place on an ancient soil? Lot N° 76 X.O. Tradition Cognac Ugni Blanc Blend

Hard to beat for the price,
K&L notes,

The pristine condition of this stunningly copper-colored brandy is inspiring - it's gorgeous. In the nose there are delicate fragrances of spice, sesame seed, light oak, and baked pears; seven more minutes in the glass bring out pineapple, light toffee, milk, and brown sugar. The palate entry is elegant, composed, and moderately sweet in more of an oaky than a fruity way; by the midpalate stage, there's flavor evidence of ripe pear, white grapes, cake frosting, Oloroso sherry, orange peel, and dark honey. End up sugary sweet, satiny textured, and long in the throat. 4 Stars - Highly Recommended - Spirit Journal - F. Paul Pacult 40% ABV

Domaine Château de Fontpinot Grande Tres Vieille Reserve Champagne Cognac XO Ugni Blanc

Chocolate ganache nose sows lime zest and cedar, vanilla panna cotta, lemon tart, hazelnut, absinthe film, and orange rind across a semi-hot surface that resembles an exotic, forgotten cocktail; tea biscuit, lavender and creme caramel. An olfactory feast that endlessly inspires. Soft and warm palate with herbaceous thyme, chive, cilantro, basil afloat on vanilla-caramel, lemongrass, tea tree oil, bay, lemon zest, lime pith, and candied lemon. Cappuccino and bakers chocolate, spun sugar, dark brown sugar, apple blossom honey, treacle, baklava, pine nut, pecan, and coffee cookie. Most interesting is the layers of cascading flavors maintain their original impact while generously allowing the next to shine seamlessly. I have had this many times sans analysis, without fully appreciating its impeccable composition. A triumph! .

V.S.O.P. Grande Champagne Cognac

At least 15 years of age on this VSOP from a family-owned producer. 40% abv. Very fragrant scotch-like vanilla oak and dried fruit. Complex and spicy finish. Goes well with dates and salted almonds as a digestif. Sipping it neat by a Christmas tree, but it also really wakes up with an ice cube🎄 Not Henny! 🙌 — 7 years ago
