I love this wine, but the price of entry has become far too high…

Cascina Francia Barolo Nebbiolo 2009

Medium pale ruby , wide garnet rim . This shows some development with porcini , sandalwood , bitumen , black tea and some sweet blackberry and red cherry . On the palate a bit more of the blackberry , cherry and sous bois , with herbal hints , quite rounded and juicy but with balanced acidity and still gritty tannin. Slightly warming alcohol , so would drink this a little on the cooler side . There is a liquorice and tar like tinge on the good length finish . This is drinking well now, though needs a bit of time in the glass, and will continue to show well over the next 5-10 years or so , perhaps longer . If not the most complex or structured Cascina Francia this makes up for it with its attractive , heart on sleeve personality, and is a great choice to open at the moment . This was still going the day after , bit more dark fruit on the nose and saline , mineral on the palate, still grippy tannins . — 8 days ago

Bolgheri Sassicaia Cabernet Sauvignon Cabernet Franc 2008

A wonderfully balanced Cabinet blend from Bolgheri. Definitely Cabernet notes but so balanced that nothing stands out. Sassicaia is definitely Bordeaux First or Second Growth standard. Understated but irresistible nonetheless. 85% Cabernet Sauvignon; 15% Cabernet Franc. Probably one of the best non Bordeaux Cabernet blends. — 7 days ago

Monprivato di Castiglione Falletto Barolo Nebbiolo 2007

2007 vintage drinking very well - was almost ready out of the bottle but improved with a few hours in the decanter. Wonderful red fruit on the palate with strawberries, raspberries and red cherries. Alcohol was slightly perceptible. This is in a good place and seems unlikely to improve much, but nowhere near a state of decline. Fruit is still quite primary with nice acidity — 3 hours ago

Barbaresco Nebbiolo 2011

Paul K
9.3

I think this may be my first ever Barbaresco. Decanted for four hours. Having alongside short rib bolognese home made all the way.
Medium body. Transparent garnet with tawny edge. Lots going on with the nose! Strawberries, spice, flowers, dusty stone, just a hint of leather, and cedar. On the palate pomegranate, cherry, strawberry, cranberry, and sweet tobacco. Will not be my last Barbaresco!

@Paul K Happy New Year to you and your family!! We love Barbaresco wines!! Best approach to it is to visit the region during white truffle season, drink locally, and bring copious amounts of it home with you 😂 A few producers we recommend trying are Sottimano, Roagna, La Spinetta, Vietti, Bruno Rocca… obviously you’ve discovered Gaja 💕😆

@Paul K P.S. An insanely good QPR can also be found with Nebbiolo Langhe wines, made with the same grape, but in a more youthful, early-drinking style at a fraction of the price. For example GB Burlotto’s Nebbiolo Langhe is stunning!! 😍 Cheers, friend!! We look forward to hearing what you think on this journey! 🍷🍷

Allegrini

Palazzo della Torre Veronese Corvina Blend 2021

One of the wines that has made Allegrini famous, vineyard surrounds Villa della Torre. A blend of about 40% Corvina Veronese, 30% Corvinone, 25% Rondinella & 5% Sangiovese, deep Ruby with aromas of dried berry fruit and black pepper spice. On the palate flavors of blackberry and black cherry with vanilla, figs and licorice notes, good balance, lively acid with fine chewy tannins. Medium finish ending with fruit, mineral and earthy spice. Nice value. — 21 days ago
