We start with eucalyptus, then berries of any kind, from raspberry to blueberries or blackcurrant

Intensity, vibrancy and length

1st of 3 Mendoza Malbecs for NYT Wine School. Uco Valley, high altitudes, calcarean soil, fermented in concrete eggs. Medium/deep purple, blackberry and mint on the nose. Blackberry, plum, boysenberry, mint, pepper, and minerals on the palate. Needed a lot of time to open up. Some alcohol burn. It’s good and well made but doesn’t change my overall impression that Malbecs are kind of boring. — 24 days ago
Deliciously smooth Malbec. Deep red colour highlighted by blackberry, liquorice, vanilla and finishes with mocha notes on the palette. Could even pick up subtle stewed tomatoes. Good expression of a Uco Valley Malbec. Medium tannins, a good length. Delicious find! — a day ago
This is a very tasty Malbec from Santa Barbara County.
Deep purple in color.
Fruit forward and dry with medium acidity and a tangy finish.
Showing black fruits with chocolates, oak, light vanilla, vegetables, tobacco, spices and peppercorn. Tasty and interesting.
Easy drinking and spicy.
Good by itself or with food. I paired it with a charcuterie board of meats and cheeses.

To be honest, the Malbec seems to be the least consistent of Kettle Valley's expressions. I find the variation wild between vintages of this stuff. The 2011 eight years after vintage has some graphite going on with perhaps some under-ripeness of fruit making an appearance, but the brambly blackberry fruit quickly gives way to a wave of blueberry here that works ok with the heavy dose of wood. Dense purple red, highly extracted pigment, some sediment in suspension. Butter, purple fruit and flowers in nose, blackberry, thyme, sage, slight cigar box. Velvety blackberry texture and flavor in mouth, slightly bitter and alcoholic on finish initially. After 30 minutes, chewy tar finish emerges with moderate astringency and a touch of menthol.
