Donnafugata

Sul Vulcano Etna Rosso Red Blend 2021

Vineyard from the north area of the vulcano.
Last acquisition of Donnafugata in terms of time , but not in terms of importance.
A true mineral expression of a Sicilian wine
Intense, long, generous, mouthfilling.
Etna wines are getting every year more serious.

Marchesi de' Frescobaldi

Castel Giocondo Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Sangiovese 1995

Recent acquisition from my Italy trip. Excellent Brunello - typical licorice, cedar and black cherry notes I love in this style of wine with the body and acidity to bring it all together. Damn I wish I had more of these. — 4 years ago

Château Clerc Milon

Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend 1986

Nose has ripe plum, cut red cherry, black currant, dried blackberry, shaved milk chocolate, old pipe tobacco, moist leather, dry oak firewood, wet oak barrel with fading volatile acidity on the initial attack.

Palate has blackberry juice, over-ripe plum, dried black currant, over-ripe black cherry, wet garden soil, dried tomato with a lightly drying finish and still showing mild tannins.

A recent acquisition, provenance is good but this bottle seems lightly undeveloped on the palate still, decanted 3H.

Paired to Allen Bros. rib caps, cast iron pan oven pre-heated then 1/2 stick of non-salted butter over the stove with constant basting, 5M to a beautiful medium rare. Served alongside our garden smashed potatoes, nothing finer than the vegetables we labor.

Di Costanzo

Di Co Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2023

A fab Cabernet from Napa with excellent QPR. Old school 12.8% ABV lets the fruit come through. First time with this producer, I can see why gaining a following with CT score at 93. BD17 acquisition. I know, it’s a 2023 but I wanted to try it fresh, will lay down my other bottled for prob another 3-5 years. — 4 months ago

Domaine Bernard-Bonin

Vieilles Vignes Meursault Chardonnay 2013

Nose has crushed pear, sliced yellow apple, vanilla candy, dried lemon peel, tangerine pith, (moist) granulated white sugar and lemon oil.

Palate has mashed pear, lemon zest, lemon flesh, under-ripe white peach, tangerine essence and (faint) wet slate.

Fantastic balance of (medium) acidity with great length to the finish. Just a fantastic bottle with great cellaring before our acquisition within the past couple years.

I suggest not passing by any version of a Bernard-Bonin wine whenever you see one, always great, better with age. 2013/2014 white Burgundy's are just drinking so perfect right now. Drink this 2022-2028.

Decanted 2H, continuing development.

Celler De Capçanes

Montsant Cabrida Garnacha 2011

Celler de Capcanes is a modern cooperative in the province of Tarragona. Founded in 1933. Aromas of hot wet bitumen road with mint, menthol, herbs. After a while in the decanter a ripe red fruited perfume and a touch of tar. No sign of raspberry which one often gets with new world Grenache. A medium to full bodied palate. The following night the palate was a little “blocky” without much nuance. I’m somewhat non-plussed for the price and reputation. 100% Garnacha; one of the 1001 Wines; approximately 3000 bottles made. Imported into Australia by the wonderfully named “The Spanish Acquisition “. Postscript: The name derives from when the vineyards were abandoned and taken over by goats (cabra means goat). — 5 years ago

Acquisition Cabernet Sauvignon 2008

“Wine is the only art work you can drink.” Luis Fernando Olaverri
This 2008 is like drinking seductive poetry! Grapes sourced from the Red Mountain AVA. Lots of sediment to filter out and aeration opens it up. My goodness this is smooth.

Château Batailley

Pauillac Cabernet Sauvignon 1982

Shay A
9.2

Still sporting the $12.99 sticker that this was many years ago. Just under top of shoulder fill. Cork was fantastic.

A few of the other early ‘80s wines I’ve opened from this same acquisition needed time to open up and blow off funk, but this was ready from the get go. At its age (and provenance), the wine is translucent ruby with bricking at the rim and shows classic Pauillac notes (graphite, leather, cassis) with tart red fruits, herbs and some pipe tobacco. Still retaining acidity and a decent amount of tannin at the finish. A unique high-toned/mint note came around aromatically ever so often and would fade.

Followed out of bottle during the evening and it stayed consistent.

Do not adjust your tv set, that is indeed a 10 year old rose from Silas, thanks to BD15 acquisition and intro to this great producer! What better than a rose of PN from OR. Gorgeous, rustic textures and could go even longer. ABV 13% - $25 — 2 years ago

SVR Napa Valley Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 1996

1996 | Birthday weekend for my lovely wife.

Slight funk on the nose, but solid, dusty red fruits on the palate. Double decanted with notes at 5H. Complete notes on future bottles. 2006 acquisition with careful storage since.

Paired to USDA Prime Strip Steaks (baseball-cut), Allen Bros. Chicago.

I do enjoy the old, minimalist label showcasing the view of the winery in the hill.

Château Talbot

Saint-Julien Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2018

100 year anniversary ... not of the winery, but of the acquisition of the winery by the Cordier family--France is unreal! Deeply extracted, royal purple, opaque, medium plus to full bodied. Red cherry dominated on open but after an hour blackberry has taken over. Spices and a hint of vanilla in the background. Medium plus alcohol 14.5. Medium acidity. Tannins are still biting a bit. Super long length. I would recommend holding this at least another 2-3 years. The tannins will soften, and I suspect we will enjoy some tertiary flavors from the spiced vanilla that remains.

Taittinger

Comtes de Champagne Grand Crus Brut Blanc de Blancs 2008

a constellation of factors came together such that I opened this young bottle—recent acquisition of 6 more bottles, the memory of 1990 Comtes on release, a Galloni post on Delectable touting the wine, and a thirst for quality champagne.

Delicious and more open than 08 Dom today, it’s not real creamy but has super balance and drive, delicious fruit, very expansive on the palate as it warms. Each glass gets better. Sweet midpalate fruit that is dense but not weighty, incredible persistence on the palate, really a wow.
