Giant Steps

Nocton Vineyard Pinot Noir 2018

The colour is becoming more tawny since my last tasting in 2023. Lovely aromatics of red fruits and Sous Bois. Manages to combine the characteristics of both Tasmania’s Coal River Valley Pinot Noir and Steve Flamsteed’s excellent winemaking (ex Giant Steps Yarra Valley). I have previous Delectable notes on this wine. Sweet red cherry. Fleshy and supple. This wine scooped the pool at the 2019 Royal Queensland Wine Awards winning Best Pinot Noir of Show; Best Red Table Wine; Best Single Vineyard Red and Grand Champion Wine of Show. Since the acquisition of Giant Steps by the Jackson Family I’m not sure that the Nocton Vineyard is still made? Postscript: Research on line indicates that no vintage of Nocton was made after this one in 2018. — 6 days ago

Silas

Calliope Cuvée Pinot Noir 2014

Do not adjust your tv set, that is indeed a 10 year old rose from Silas, thanks to BD15 acquisition and intro to this great producer! What better than a rose of PN from OR. Gorgeous, rustic textures and could go even longer. ABV 13% - $25 — 2 years ago

Sterling Vineyards

SVR Napa Valley Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 1996

1996 | Birthday weekend for my lovely wife.

Slight funk on the nose, but solid, dusty red fruits on the palate. Double decanted with notes at 5H. Complete notes on future bottles. 2006 acquisition with careful storage since.

Paired to USDA Prime Strip Steaks (baseball-cut), Allen Bros. Chicago.

I do enjoy the old, minimalist label showcasing the view of the winery in the hill.

Château Batailley

Pauillac Cabernet Sauvignon 1982

Shay A
9.2

Still sporting the $12.99 sticker that this was many years ago. Just under top of shoulder fill. Cork was fantastic.

A few of the other early ‘80s wines I’ve opened from this same acquisition needed time to open up and blow off funk, but this was ready from the get go. At its age (and provenance), the wine is translucent ruby with bricking at the rim and shows classic Pauillac notes (graphite, leather, cassis) with tart red fruits, herbs and some pipe tobacco. Still retaining acidity and a decent amount of tannin at the finish. A unique high-toned/mint note came around aromatically ever so often and would fade.

Followed out of bottle during the evening and it stayed consistent.

Daou Vineyards

Adelaida District Cabernet Sauvignon 2021

The 21 estate cab. Beautiful. Savoring the pre-acquisition vintages. — 2 years ago

Marchesi de' Frescobaldi

Castel Giocondo Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Sangiovese 1995

Recent acquisition from my Italy trip. Excellent Brunello - typical licorice, cedar and black cherry notes I love in this style of wine with the body and acidity to bring it all together. Damn I wish I had more of these. — 3 years ago

Donnafugata

Sul Vulcano Etna Rosso Red Blend 2021

Vineyard from the north area of the vulcano.
Last acquisition of Donnafugata in terms of time , but not in terms of importance.
A true mineral expression of a Sicilian wine
Intense, long, generous, mouthfilling.
Etna wines are getting every year more serious.

Mollydooker Wines

Velvet Glove McLaren Vale Shiraz 2006

This was a lucky acquisition in 2008. Two states, five cities and seven homes later, survived. I'm so happy and relieved that it kept as well as it did! A truly amazing wine that lives up to its reputation! Sublime Velvet. — 2 years ago

Domaine Bernard-Bonin

Vieilles Vignes Meursault Chardonnay 2013

Nose has crushed pear, sliced yellow apple, vanilla candy, dried lemon peel, tangerine pith, (moist) granulated white sugar and lemon oil.

Palate has mashed pear, lemon zest, lemon flesh, under-ripe white peach, tangerine essence and (faint) wet slate.

Fantastic balance of (medium) acidity with great length to the finish. Just a fantastic bottle with great cellaring before our acquisition within the past couple years.

I suggest not passing by any version of a Bernard-Bonin wine whenever you see one, always great, better with age. 2013/2014 white Burgundy's are just drinking so perfect right now. Drink this 2022-2028.

Decanted 2H, continuing development.
