Finally I get to taste the legendary 18. Been waiting for this day for almost a year. It does not disappoint. Nose is slightly muted but has stunning florals. Violets and mid season cherries. Really ethereal. Stunning earth and minerals. Just sick. Such clarity, detail and vividness. A nose one cannot stop smelling. Smells like elite 1er Cru Red Burgundy. Like VR or CM. Maybe a NSG near VR. This is the creme de la creme. My goodness this is a benchmark German Pinot. Wow. This is even better, albeit young on the palate. Sweet like you cannot believe and unreal power, depth and concentration. Such power but also grace. This is super refined and also has substantial structure and length. Wow the length. Nose gets so complex after 10 minutes or so. Just insane. Herbal, forest, wild flowers. Sickness. There are so many elements here it’s hard to describe. The sweetness on the palate is crazy. But it’s backed up by unreal minerality and earthiness. While this is obviously young this is the greatest young Thorle Pinot I’ve ever had. Just stunning.
Closes up with air and structure becomes more prominent but just massive power, depth and concentration. — 15 hours ago
Another stunning nose. Apple. Green apple, barely ripe pear and stunning vivid minerals. Hint of smoke. Good breadth to the nose. Palate is ripe and rich but has such cut and minerality. Silky yet structured and just the mildest, complimentary hint of oak. Very very juicy. Complex, jagged minerality and some caressing barely there apple fruit. Long, even some lovey finesse and wonderful purity. Nose develops some woodsy, tree bark aromas after some minimal air. Also some lovely spice. Like an incense spice. Terrific depth. This is special. — 7 days ago
Ahh the glorious Probstey. Actually some fruit on the nose. Lemon. Meyer lemon, spice and expansive minerals. Gorgeous almost cloud like in its purity. Some bitter citrus notes as well. What a palate. Amazing Probstey. So pure, so delicate, so clean. Dense, structured and super nimble but this wine has presence. It walks in a room and you turn around to see who has entered. Unreal nose now. Sicko purity. Bergamot. Almost green tea. So so good. Young and structured but so much going on. Unreal suave structure and almost a tannic backbone. Long. Glides on the palate. Terrific inner mouth aromas. Unreal texture and complexity. Citrus and layers of other citrus. Balance is zen like. Really long, compact and persistent. Seems like it needs to open but my o my is it all there. — 7 days ago
The best value Pinot value play in the Rheinhessen IMHO. Amazingly deep nose. So deep. So classy. Dark tee cherries. Violets. Layered, delicate and intense. Wow this nose smells like grand cru. It’s seriously the best nose I’ve ever smelled on this wine. It’s so refined and vivid. Palate is sweet, layered, structured and complex. This needs air but man is it all there. Big vivacious tannins and incredible sap and structure. Fresh and dense. What energy and depth. Big clamps down on the finish. Really long. I’ll be back in an hour. After air the nose gets more brambly. Palate gets even sweeter but high acid and nice sour cherries to counterbalance.
9.3 to 9.4 with air. Sweeter, deeper and more cut. Cuts a swath across the palate. Great. Long finish. — 15 hours ago
The big boy at Thorle. The creme de la creme. Nose is super complex but mad closed. Always the best wines take the longest to unfurl. Spicey. Citrus. Massive limestone. Amazing purity and depth. The nose of the superstar wine. Herbal and mineral. Wafting. Always changing. Wow, what a palate. Concentrated and dense with all sorts of pithy vineyard peach, apricot and citrus and then snaps back with intense minerality and ridiculous freshness. Wow. What presence. Takes over your palate and leaves an impression of minerals like nothing else. Super impressive. Sappy and long. Nose gets more complex as it airs. Just more and more. Dizzying. The limestone imprint is palpable. Amazing density and concentration and as usual Holle needs the most time and air. I will be back. But a no brainer 9.6. — 7 days ago
Really unique and distinctive nose. Citrus, herbs, flowers. A very earthy spatlese nose. Some brown sugar as well. Really vivid and detailed. Unlike any spatlese I’ve ever smelled. Just a brilliant nose. 9.6. Easy. Wow, what a palate. So nimble, spicey and complex. Insane acidity. Just electricity. Man this is exactly like an 01 middle mosel spatlese. So so impressive. The acid and length are nuts. Perfectly judged sweetness. A true spatlese. The nose is so exotic. So complex and so pure. Really nice. Wow that acid wakes up my canker sores! What a wine. — 7 days ago
The mineral bomb from Thorle and it does not disappoint. Massively mineral nose. Like a spice bazaar perfume mixed in with mega limestone. Hugely expansive and just gorgeous. The mineral is such a nice perfume. Crunchy, elegant and deep. But also slightly closed. Insane minerality and freshness. So pure. I think right now there is zero fruit on the palate and my score goes up .5 because of that. Just a stunner. The level of crystalline purity on the palate is just stunning. It cleanses the palate. Excellent acidity but the freshness of this wine is what truly stands out. The geekiest Thorle. Just insane. Nose starting to get herbal and groovy. What a vintage 19 is. Buy it all. Man does this slap. Leaves a ridiculous mineral impression on your tongue. Like a mineral fossil. Cusp of 9.4/9.5. — 7 days ago
Holy moly. This is psychotic. What a nose. Deep, penetrating, wild cherries, forest floor, so so perfumed. An earthy sweetness is just overwhelming. Amazing. So elegant and delicate. Yet so deep and vivid. Best young Probstey Pinot nose ever. Just ridiculous. Palate is sweet, dense and so clear. The clarity on this is bananas. Sweet, silky and super deep. Velvety tannins and so much energy. Terrific wood spice on the nose. Adds so much. Complexity on fleek. Almost painful concentration. Amazing cherries. A literal tiny berry fruit cherry explosion. Genius. Finish is all limestone, sweet cherries and velvet. A masterpiece. — 15 hours ago
Hugely deep and expressive nose. Lemon, minerals, limestone. Lime zest and lime flesh. Lovely fresh and dried herbs. Super complex. Interesting note of chalkiness. Wow. That’s a 9.3/9.4 nose. Just sickness. Terrific palate. Superb concentration and freshness. Crunchy minerals. Superb texture and density but being nimble and light as a feather. Long, massively mineral finish. The minerality here is compelling. Really long. Wonderful wine and value. Terrific intensity. This is exactly the way a baby GG should be. Superb structure for short term aging but how can one resist? — 7 days ago
New one from Thorle. A favorite grape. Nose is all violets and spices. Tweed jacket and wool as well. So unique. Superb minerality and earthiness. Love the nose here. Not sure how much Rheinhessen Fruh I’ve actually had. Not much if any.
Palate is sweet and silky with terrific purity, concentration and sap. Very very nice. Violets, red cherries and some blackberries as well. Really great sweetness and ripe tannins. Terrific wine and value. Really wonderfully textured and so elegant. This bats way way above its class. — 15 hours ago
