This is drinking so well now. Nose is stunning and floral. Spices galore. Amazing cherries and Xmas spice. Gingerbread. Lovely limestone background. Beautiful mid season cherries. Super sweet cherry fruit and velvety tannins. So tangy and concentrated. Amazingly pure. Before 2018/2019 this was the benchmark Thorle Pinot and nice to see it’s drinking so well. Terrific sweetness and the tannins are so good and come one more with air. Sweet, silky and velvety. — 13 days ago

@Lyle Fass You said this Thorle is drinking well now, but what do you expect for a drinking window?

@Brent Young in 15/14/13 holle has maybe a 10 year window. In 16/17 maybe 12-14, in 18/19 I think 15-18 year window. they keep getting better and more age worthy.

Wow. Just wow. This nose has unlimited depth. Huge dark cherries. Black. Red. Dark red. Stunning limestone. Blackberry as well. Just huge, dense, but serene. Spice. A new nuance every time I stick my large nose in the glass. Palate is painfully intense and has a kaleidoscopic intensity. Ungodly sweet fruit and a huge limestone mineral wash but in classic Holle fashion this is around 10% of its potential upon opening and the finish is again clipped like the 19 Holle Riesling. The nose has almost a macerated cherry effect. The balance and length are perfect but it’s a donut wine right now with a big gaping hole in the the middle. It will bialyize soon. The nose is at a 9.7 now. I know the palate will catch up. The nose has some of the most stunning fruit ever. Truly wow. The finesse is starting as are the sweet inner mouth aromas and the tannins are sweet and so fine. Really profound length and such a finesse. I can see why Piggott gave this 99. I’m not quite there yet but I might with air. Getting super tangy and even more black cherry fruited. What a finish. Sneakily long. 9.6 to 9.8 with air. Just so elegant and seamless. Mind blowing. — 3 months ago

Huge expressive stunning nose. Deep fleshy minerals. Lime zest. Minerals. Pink grapefruit. Other types of citrus. Nuanced, layered and complex. Juicy, dense and very concentrated with amazing sap and freshness. Super citric and jaw droppingly pure. Citrus flesh really pronounced on the nose. Wow this is so structured. More than Probstey and Schlossberg and it starts out closed but also has the icing on cake texture of elite Riesling. But the finish is clipped for now. A lovely airy saline limestone now emanates from the glass. Hint of barely ripe tropical fruit. Needs massive air, especially on the palate. The finesse is starting to come through as is some ripe sweet citrus fruit. Inner mouth aromas are also developing. I’ll be back. — 3 months ago

Spätburgunder 2017

A great German Bourgogne rouge.

Nose is cherry flower. Early season cherries.

Palate is crisp cherry. Some hint of spice. Grippy. Still fresh.

A remarkable effort for the pittance this cost.

The first whiff you know you’re in the presence of greatness. Soaring, vivid cherry fruit. Just towering in its vividness and intensity. Smokey and just a gobsmack to the nostrils of pure minerality that is just so clear. Just a wow nose. Thorle 19 Pinots hit different. It’s a cherry stank. Tiny berry but also big perfectly ripe berries. This jumps like few noses can. The palate is just elite sweetness with even more elite elegance. This wine floats. No stinging like a bee. Just the butterfly part. The dark cherries just abound on the nose and the palate. Just the best Probstey by miles. And 18 is great! Look at my note! But it’s not this. A heavenly perfume after air. The palate is so complete and the elegance is best I’ve ever had at Thorle. But that fruit is so on point and so clear. Wow is this getting long. Another level. This wine is another level entirely of German Pinot. It gets sweeter, deeper and more elegant. An Asian spice is in the nose now. This is firmly in the Vosne Romanee camp of German Pinot. — 3 months ago
