Marqués de Murrieta

Dalmau Rioja Tempranillo Blend 2013

Deep Ruby color and intense juicy black fruit. Aromas of plum, cedar, black Cherry, blackberry, vanilla. High acid, medium tanning and full body. 14.4% abv so a bit of a brooding monster. Long finish- very much an ultra modern evocation of Rioja with 71% Tempranillo, 15% Cabernet and 14% Graciano — a month ago

Smash City Santa Maria Pinot Noir 2017

2017 Vintage. 15.7% Alcohol. Santa Maria Pinot Noir done like a huge Syrah! Monster fruit and size with balanced acidity. Only got better as it breathed. Not the French burgundy style at all, but much more fun. Bravo Russell P. From for doing your own style. — a month ago

Tignanello Toscana Super Tuscan Blend

We tackled this monster at The River Cafe over the summer. Larger formats always seem to evolve that bit better over time and this was no exception. Absolutely fantastic. — 2 months ago

Big and starting to hit the down side but lots of positives. If you like a monster Grenache this is your jam, but drink it quicker than this. — a month ago

Smash City Pinot Noir 2015

This was a monster truck Pinot for sure. Not to be paired lightly with food and not to be mistaken for a Burgundy. This has extraction, alcohol, and tons of flavor. Different but fun. — a day ago

Domaine François Raveneau

Clos Chablis Grand Cru Chardonnay 2012

Intense. Surprisingly rich and broad. A punch of rock pool then deep sweet fruit. Intense, mineral and long. Atypical raveneau as it’s a bit of a monster but Awesome quality, depth and length. I guess why Clos is the thing. — 25 days ago

Progeny

Reserve Mt. Veeder Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

I rated this a 95 a little under 2 years ago. This wine has done quite a bit of changing since then, definitely in a good way. It has become more structured and balanced. What a monster! Starts out with toasted oak, sweet bright and ripe blackberry, vanilla, cinnamon spice, black pepper, graphite all in the nose. The initial taste begged for a decant as this was primarily served pop and pour and the fruit was a little muted. Palate was dominated by blackberry fruit and seemed to develop a small amount of gravelly character in the middle. Finished with black pepper and black licorice notes. The bottle enjoyed 2 years ago seemed to be a little more forward and you can definitely tell this one pushed more to an even balance and longer finish. They hold these back just a tiny bit, and now I really understand why. Has another 15-20 years and I expect this to continue developing quite a bit. — 22 days ago

@Mike R I had lots of reservations about opening this up, but it was the only one of the non-SSR that I had more than one bottle of! Plus, I have more of the recent release coming in. I was actually very surprised how approachable it was.
