So silky

Domaine Duroche

Bourgogne Pinot Noir 2015

Nose has juiced ripe cherries, wet cedar, roses, dry garden soil and faint strawberry jam.

Palate has bright cherry fruit, elderberry jelly, ripe cranberry, wet leather and faint tobacco notes. Great acidity and long finish.

Decanted 5H, this is in the zone now for sure.

Paired with a local whole chicken, 24H brine, Asian style spice rub, cooked on my grill rotisserie with apple wood chips smoking away for about 75m. Potatoes, onions and root vegetables in the roasting pan beneath to catch all the drippings. Crispy skin on the bird and good smoke flavor/penetration in the meat. A great reward for laboring away in the yard and garden all weekend.

Pomerol Red Bordeaux Blend 2016

From magnum. Smoking good. Streamlined, detailed, and direct, with good structure and excellent focus. Tight and tense, wound up, with rose and oak spice on the nose and a core of red cherry, licorice, cocoa and mint on the palate. The tannin work is fabulous here, they're present but ripe, giving framework but in now way drying or tiresome. Fresh and firm. Big fan of this. — 17 days ago

Silver Oak

Six Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

First off, all the reviews on Delectable were not for Silver Oak Six. Six is only made in select years. 2009 for Alexander Valley, 2012 for Napa Valley, 2014 Alexander Valley. Okay, now to the review of the ‘09 Six (Alex). Upon opening this was tight with sharp edges. After a 5 hour decant, this wine is smoking! Complex and brooding with harmonious fruit and acid! I drank a 2012 Six (Napa) a few months ago and I was critical of the wine. I now think I erred in not letting that wine breath. Shame on me! If you are reading a review of a Six that says it is a vintage other than ‘09, ‘12 or ‘14, please know those are in error. — a month ago

The Original California Pinot Noir

Not getting much on the nose, but a very sweet and drinkable Pinot Noir. Strawberry and red current jam. Not much earth or flint, but very impressed with this Pinot. — 3 months ago

Kanonkop Estate

Simonsberg Stellenbosch Pinotage 2013

Pinotage is a grape everyone loves to hate, but I think it has parts to love. Kanonkop makes an ambitious, bold showy wine that swings big, has to nail it, and mostly does. To me, the Pinotage tell is a thing of smoking wet tar and milk chocolate coffee sludge. That's here. Follows with black pepper, bourbon spice and a curious banana note which I think may just be oak and smoke stacked sideways. Then follow the dark fruits. Blue plums and blackberries, and an underlying mineral saltiness. There's lots here and lots to love. — 3 months ago

The Ultimate Ten Years Old Single Malt Islay Scotch Whisky

My first Ardberg and it left quite an impression. Gosh! This was like eating bacon and smoking cigars. Ron Swanson should be drinking this instead of Lagavulin 😂 Truly, it feels like someone decided to bottle up that campfire by the sea that's been drenched in bacon fat from dinner the night before. With water, the marine quality becomes more apparent, but that smoke just remains. Only with great concentration can one discern some fruit notes (citrus). The finish is just all about that endless peat. Surprisingly, this whisky was quite "smooth" despite all the extremities it brought. Definitely need to taste more Ardbegs to understand what's going on - not displeasing, but for now, Talisker's more up my alley in the category of peated whiskies. — 5 months ago

Fine description!

Château d'Epiré

Savennières Chenin Blanc 2018

Military Chenin - first rank straight faced silver skinned Savennieres without any sense of humor - not even a smirk.

Accents of pear, lime, jasmine flowers and smoking flint. Honest and transparent.

You can taste the chalky porous rock filters feeding the vines.

Bold austere flavors of lemon and crisp pear and white pepper with a little bitter bite of white flowers just at the end.

Côtes du Rhône Red Rhone Blend

Of all the lettered offerings this one was my favorite. Not fruity or smoking like those pagan ones. But relaxed and to the point. — 2 months ago
