Napa Valley Petite Sirah 2012

Shay A
9.2

A project between Doug Shafer and Elias Fernandez. I think I’ve had this for at least five years and have never known the ideal time to open it. I don’t drink much petite sirah, but when TX barbecue is the food on the table, I figured this would work, and it did.

48 months in barrel! Inky in the glass with aromatics of potpurri, fresh squeezed dark berries, mixed berry cobbler, and espresso. Expecting a brash profile on the palate, I was greeted by a rather tame (albeit juicy) style which had great mid-palate depth. Freshly squeezed raspberries, black raspberries, blueberries, red and black currant, hint of peppered rhubarb and dark chocolate. Compared to other PS wines I’ve enjohed (Switchback Ridge, Vincent Arroyo) this is less chocolate and spice driven, but the juicy and rich mid palate is there in spades. Oak tannin at the finish but not harsh. Paired really well with TX brisket and sauce. Seems to be in a good window now, but PS always seems to me like it can hold for a while, so no rush.

I love PS, but really only ever drink Grgich PS. Not something I have very often either.

Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2018

100% Cabernet Sauvignon. Dark purple color. Fruit forward aromas of black currant, blackberry, violets and graphite. Pallet features dark fruit, baking spices, bakers chocolate and that ever present graphite. Rich and luxurious. Tannins are nicely integrated with just enough acidity. Fruit was restrained. Very Left Bank “Bordeaux-like” Red. Best with food. — a day ago

Insignia Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2018

Blend of 87% Cab Sauv, 8% Petit Verdot, 3% Malbec and 2% Cab Franc sourced from estate-owned vineyards, aged 24 months in 100% new French oak. Deep Ruby, dark fruits, spice, complex nose. On the palate flavors of rich berry fruits, spice and vanilla oak, well structured harmonious wine. Fine soft rich tannins, long finish ending with fruit, tobacco and sweet earthy tones. Tasting great, young and juicy, should easily last another couple of decades+ in the bottle. Wow! — 8 days ago

Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2019

Deep purple, almost Inky in color, with a short reddish rim.

Strong nose of black currants, black plums, blueberries, oak, licorice, spices, coffee, dark chocolates, vegetables and black pepper.

Full bodied with medium acidity and long legs.

Dry on the palate with blackberries, black currants, plums, cooked cherries, oak, vanilla, licorice, cloves, herbs spices, dark chocolates, coffee, earth and peppercorn.

Long finish with round tannins and tangy raspberries.

This 3 year old Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa Valley is starting to drink nicely, although still young.

Showing nice complexity with a nice mouthfeel. Big, rich, fruit forward and spicy.

Needed a couple of hours in the decanter to open up. Will be better in 3 years, and will age nicely in the next 7 to 10 years.

Good by itself or with food, and will pair very nicely with a nice piece of steak.

A blend of 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7.5% Petit Verdot, 7% Merlot and 4.5% Malbec.

14.5% alcohol by volume.

92 points.

Napa Valley Merlot 1997

It is time for some Merlot on this #MerlotThursday. Let's bring Merlot back!

Deep ruby in color with a wide reddish /brick rim.

Full bodied with medium acidity and long legs.

Dry on the palate with nice complexity and mouthfeel.

Showing blackberries, black currants, plums, earth, cedar, leather, chocolates, tobacco, mildew, light vinaigrette and black pepper.

Long finish with round tannins and tangy raspberries.

This 25 year old Merlot is a tad tired, but still very enjoyable.

I've had this Merlot before, but it was a more recent vintage. I have a feeling it's this specific bottle that is flawed. It might be improper storage.

Big tannins show up after 4 hours in a decanter.

Helen Turley was the wine maker. Robert Parker 96 points.

Regardless of how it is showing now, it's always nice to try these kind of wines.

A blend of 85% Merlot with 15% Cabernet Sauvignon.

14.5% alcohol by volume.

91 points.

$100 (current vintage).

Philip Togni Vineyard

Ca' Togni Sweet Red Muskattrollinger 1994

This is my first experience with this grape and this wine. I was given this wine by a close friend, the 1994 Ca' Togni Sweet Red Wine Philip Togni Vineyard Spring Mountain St. Helena, California. The grape is the Muskat Trollinger Muscat Hamburg.

On the nose there is licorice, leather, coffee and dark earth.

On the palate is licorice, buttery nutty carmel, concentrated dried dark fruits and butterscotch.

This wine is medium to full bodied and has port feel and qualities, sweet very viscous medium acidity and tannins seem to be fully resolved that moves deliciously into a long sweet savory nutty finish. Continued great weekend to everyone, stay safe and healthy. Nostrovia! 🍷🍷🍷🍷

Rouge No 3 Napa Valley Red Blend

What a pretty wine. A rather interesting multi vintage red blend from Napa Valley but made more in the old school style. Ruby red core with violet edges. A bright, floral nose begins to unfurl with summer flowers and fresh blackberries. There’s a nice element of cocoa and vanilla as well, along with dried herbs. As it warms in the glass, spice begins to assume a starring role.

Mostly Cabernet Franc to go with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. This isn’t a typical ultra ripe, big and bold Napa red blend designed to appease the masses. Though it may do just that because it is so very inviting and pleasing. Smooth tannins and easy going although this is serious stuff. The palate follows the nose closely with lovely red fruit and lively dark fruit. A bit of greenery and a bit more spice. Fun, fun stuff and highly recommended.

Wm. Harrison Vineyards & Winery (William Harrison)

Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2018

William Harrison Vineyards and Winery, StHelena, cabernet sauvignon 2018. Bill Harrison has done a fantastic job with these grapes. The bouquet is driving home a black licorice and smoke! This is probably due to the Tufa soil in Saint Helena. Very nice bouquet. The palate is immediately flooded with big dark red and black fruit such as blackberry, fig, and black plum. Following the fruit, there are hints of oak and graphite. Then comes the spicy dark chocolate finish. However, there is just a hint of sharp aftertaste on the finish. However, it dissipates relatively quick. And best of all, the finish is also very dry!! I highly recommend this cab. — 8 days ago

Bin 704 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2019

Dark ruby in color with a reddish rim.

Full bodied with medium acidity and long legs.

Dry and fruity on the palate with nice complexity.

Showing black currants, cooked plums, cherries, cedar, vanilla, chocolates, tobacco, herbs, spices, light earth and peppercorn.

Medium on the finish with soft tannins and tangy raspberries.

This young Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa Valley, is easy drinking and good right out of the bottle. Much better after a couple of hours in the decanter, though.

Smooth and elegant with a nice mouthfeel. A very nice sipping wine.

Robert Parker 94 points.

Will continue to age nicely in the next 5 to 8 years.

Good by itself or with food, like BBQ Meats. I paired it with a charcuterie board.

Aged in French oak barrels (40% new).

14.5% alcohol by volume.
