Hope & Grace

Napa Valley Malbec 2016

Blackberry, black cherry, oaky plum, soft tannins. That’s correct, only 20 barrels. What a shame !!! Very well done. — 11 days ago

Wendouree

Shiraz 1996

Initial impressions - Earthy, Herbal, Soy. Cherry complex and long. Much intestinal fortitude ie. guts. Thankfully not overly menthol/eucalyptus (just a trace) as you often get with all Wendouree Cuvées. Amazing the intensity provided by those old vines going back to the 1890’s. Could easily last another 5 to 10 years but pretty much at its peak right now. This is as good as Australian Shiraz gets - up there with Grange and Hill of Grace and recognised as such by Langtons. With time in the decanter, like all great wines, they develop and change. I was getting raspberry and mineral after a few hours. An exceptional wine and in the top 5 or so wines I have had this year. In good vintages I don’t think Wendouree Shiraz should be approached at under 20 years of age. — 21 days ago

@Bob McDonald a bit jealous to start off, but i remind myself i still have a few mix bottles from the Wendouree hidden somewhere in a cave😁😁..there's no map for the cave🤣🤣
Still 96 shiraz what a wine🙏🙏🍷🍷
Cheers
Ps personally nowadays Hill of Grace and Wendouree are a touch above Grange, but i know you might disagree🧐

I guess the only comment about those iconic Shiraz would be that H of G and Wendouree are single vineyards and more subject to the vagaries of a bad vintage on their plot whereas Grange is multi regional and therefore more consistent year to year.

Perhaps you are right, but i will always prefer the style of Wendouree and HofG, but i guess that is very personal..though Grange would be a very close second😁

Albino Rocca

Ronchi Barbaresco Nebbiolo 2018

Delectable Wine
9.5

The 2018 Barbaresco Ronchi is another gorgeous wine in this lineup from Rocca. As always, the Ronchi is a Barbaresco of breadth and power. In 2018, those qualities are expressed in a decidedly understated manner. Wild cherry, plum, sage, tobacco and menthol are all kicked up in this super-expressive Barbaresco. Hints of orange peel, spice, star anise and sweet pipe tobacco grace the layered, exquisite finish. (Antonio Galloni, Vinous, February 2022)

Cuvée l'Apôtre Blanc de Blancs Premier Cru Champagne 2009

This is gorgeous. Kicked the rating up a notch after tasting on day two. Rich, vinous, old-school minded with its oxidative upbringing. Apparently a cool site with his oldest vines, this has tremendous grace give the ripeness of the vintage. — 2 years ago

Sanford & Benedict Chardonnay 2017

From a wine dinner with Sashi Moorman himself! Great flavor and intensity of new world fruit, but with the restraint and grace of the old world. The minerality and tension really keeps you engaged. — 3 years ago

9.6

Is this the best wine in Beaujolais? I think so. Super refined and complex nose of leather, dark cherries, earth and mineral. A lipstick like intensity. Saline and mineral. Just a stunning refined and complex nose that defies the appellation. Palate is round, elegant and concentrated, with such grace and nimbleness. Amazing elegant and delicate structure suggests this has a decade or more. Wonderful long finish. Grand Cru all the way. A stunning wine and I can’t wait to see how it opens. — a month ago

The Ojai Vineyard

Puerta Del Mar Chardonnay 2018

Delectable Wine
9.5

The 2018 Chardonnay Puerta Del Mar is bright and finely sculpted. Lemon oil, white flowers, mint, and a range of saline-infused overtones all grace the 2018. Weightless and yet full of flavor, the 2018 is positively stellar. It is yet another fabulous white in this range of new releases from Ojai and a terrific example of the far western edge of Santa Barbara County that is outside of the Sta. Rita Hills appellation.
